New York

NY statistically is one of the safest western cities now I believe. 9/11 really shook things up and a lot of work has gone into bringing the communities closer as well as a sense of camaraderie of the people living there. It's very cosmopolitan, well it always has been, however it really feels it now. Heck even NE NY (the Bronks and that part of town) has had a lot of development and money put into it.

I felt 100x safer walking alone at night in NY (an unfamiliar city in comparison with London) than I do in London, or a handful of other European cities.

The fiancee and I are considering a trip over in March for ~5 days to include my birthday. Researching things to do should be easy (I'd LOVE to take in a Rangers game, but looking at the fixtures they are playing H/A against the Islanders so probably won't be able to get tickets), but could do with some advice for cheapish hotels (or best places to search for them). Needs to have easy access to public transport mind. Then again part of me wants to ignore my usual cautious / spendthrift nature and say **** it, once in a lifetime trip so we may as well stay somewhere nice :)

One thing I was considering is maybe taking the train to a neighbouring city like Philly/Washington/Boston and spending a day there. Worth it or plenty to do in NYC? I just kinda feel like if I'm gonna travel to another continent I really ought not to just stay in one city if you get my drift. Plus I can see us doing all the touristy things we're interested in in maybe 3 days.

One more thing, I take it as British citizens we won't need a VISA of any kind for such a short trip?

I love reading these threads :D

^^ As long as you've not been arrested or got any sort of criminal record, don't support the nazi party etc, your passport is valid for > 6 months then you fill in the green I-90 Visa Waiver form on the plane and jobs a gooddun.

nope you just fill out a visa waiver programme form the give out on the plane, you just have to give them your details and confirm your not a crazy or a terrorist.

Oh and have your digital fingerprints and photo taken when you clear immigration

Just checked and mine expires on the 12th of Sept and was planning on coming back on the 10th of March. Never crossed my mind that it could be a problem before the 10 years was up. Wonder what the definition of 6 months is, guess I need to research this a bit.

Finally got around to writing up about my trip and sorting the pictures out (I went last August). It might give you some more ideas of what to see and do (although you have probably already done everything that I did)! :)

Can't wait to go back! :)

Great blog and photo's, very good, im pondering going now seriously. Looking on Expedia and going from Manchester seems you can get return flights and 5nights for about 800 quid for 2 in february.Picking the hotel is a bit of a task though, getting something a few miles away seems a lot cheaper.

We went for 8 days and couldn't fit it all in. You can spend at least a day in Central Park alone, or a day in Brooklyn or one of the other areas outside of Manhattan itself.

As mentioned you get a form to fill out on the plane. Then you get to spend 1 hour plus in customs as they photograph and fingerprint everyone. I am one of those people that will sit on a plane and get up when the rush is gone, but in this case I would advise getting off the plane as quickly as possible so you can get to the head of the queue. We had a 747 full of tourists being processed by 3 people . The only unenjoyable bit of the journey.

Oh and regarding safety- there are police EVERYWHERE. Don't annoy them. We were in a restaurant in Time's Square and there was a huge bang on the window. We turn to see a man on the ground and three police officers kicking the crap out of him . Then a police car showed up and two more police got out... and joined in kicking the crap out of this guy.

Still, fantastic place to go.

It's definitely on TM, I just looked. Normally when you buy tickets on there you print them out yourself.

edit: Ahh, I see what you meant, it looks soldout.

Can you just pop down over there and check for me? :D :p

If i don't end up buying tickets online i am just gonna chance it on the night. It should be a good night, im not a major WWE fan but as im in NY it seems silly to miss out.

Has anyone been to MSG? The Royal Rumble is on while im in NY at the end of January.

Can you purchase tickets at the Venue?

I went to see the Knicks! Fantastic.

If you book on tickmaster you can collect there. There are 'vending machines' in the building that you put your card in, and they spit out the tickets.

The Knicks rule! :D Ever since I started playing BBall and got into it I love the Knicks, though I was a huge fan of Jordan so I was a little torn at times. :p

Cool, where did you sit in the Arena?

I hear what your saying about ticketmaster but they are sold out.

Edit i am currently looking at ~300 level seating
