So my 2nd 360 dvd drive has decided to fail in a hail of grinding and other weird noises, exactly 6 days outisde of warranty :(

As the MS support line is closed for tonight, does anyone know what the repair cost is likely to be?

is it any more difficult then a pc dvd drive replacement ? do we need special drives?

mine is starting to clunk badly also and is out of warranty.

Thinking about it some more, am I right that all the new 360s are quieter now (die shrink?), so I'm thinking of picking one of those up and keeping this for streaming media, as the noise of this one really, really annoys me.

But if the dvd drive repair is easy I'll give it a go and I can use it as a secondary dvd player as well.

You can swap the drives but it means getting the old drive key off the old drive and injecting it into the new drive, something that is strictly forbidden from being spoken about on the forum.

I have had 2 drives die with the infamous clanging and grinding. Nothing a bit of super glue didn't fix.

The problem is caused by the magnet that holds the DVD in place, it loses its magnetism over time and starts to slide around on the upper casing of the DVD Drive. I simply super glued mine back in place and its been working for a good 6-7 months now.

If you want to add me to MSN to discuss the repair of the drive do so. Mail's in trust.

T.
