Money

why dont they print money to help the poor? seriously wondered this like all my life...

Why would that work?

More people would claim to be poor - why not make more jobs, so they are contributing to society.

On reflection, your remark sounds pretty much like the social security system...

Whats to stop the government adding a couple of 0's to there bank roll?

Didn't I suggest yesterday that you'd be better off actually trying to use your brain before starting a new thread?

Is the family brain cell out on loan today or something?

We also expect members to behave respectfully and not launch personal or abusive attacks on other members.

I take it the rules only apply in certain situations? Most of the people that have posted in this thread have broken the part stated above, board members of all levels especially those that should know better. If you want to direct abuse at the guy do it somewhere where you dont break the supposedly strict rules.

In reponse to the original question, as people have stated inflation is the key issue. A pound coin is only worth a pound on the international market etc because there are a set number of them, add a million pound coins and the value for ALL pound coins drops by a certain percentage. At least thats how i think of it in my head, may not be totally 100% accurate though.

If they printed more and gave it out the money would be worth less.

Look up hyper-inflation - I remember reading about it where a country did just that, printed off more money, and people would be paying millions for loaves of bread, and wheelbarrows full of money were literally pocket change.

Germany, depression.

Joking aside I think sooner or later terrorists / hostile states will make some kind of attempt to screw up the Western financial infrastructure. At the moment most people have an implicit trust in our banking system; we are quite happy having vast sums of money being simply numbers stored on a system somewhere and take it for granted that we can always get at it. Our whole society is now dependent on it.

Imagine what would happen if some kind of co-ordinated assault (not necessarily physical) was able to wipe out the transaction history even for a short time? I know there will be failsafes and DR in place but will all of them be reliable? I remember one of Tom Clancy's books around 10 years ago (Debt of Honour?) looked at a similar scenario involving the stock market.

Thank you. :) - You read exactly what I was getting at.

Tbh,a topic that (imo) deserves a thread in its own right.

Doesn't appear to be very consistent on the face of it.

To be honest I am appalled at the way people have responded to this thread. I understand it isn't a brilliant question but it couldn't be described in anyway as provocative. Why people have been compelled to respond in such negative way is beyond me.

You havn't seen his persistant trolling?

Do you think members participating in this thread who act in a calm professional manner start posting in the thread with one liner’s and funny pictures, constantly, in every thread started by iBot - might have something against iBot?

All I remember was a personal attack which you were pulled up by a moderator on the other day on iBot. I believe you were warned then in the "Clarkson loses money" thread the other day.
