Hi All,

On Sunday the fan belt decided to destroy itself for some unknown reason (being checked at the dealer but possible water pump seized).

So your thinking whats he moaning at only a fan belt. Well my car is 7 months old 6k miles Nissan 350z. Here is the beauty - I will be without my car for 6 days (minimum) as there are no fan belts in the UK for the newer engined model.

So a simple part that you would expect to get next day at worst takes me off road for a week. And if it isn't a failed water pump I'm going to have to most likely pay aswell.

I'm left wondering now what if something god forbid more serious breaks. Am I going to be without a car for weeks and weeks.

I'm now wondering if I wasn't better off getting a better selling car like a Boxster,Z4,M3,S2000 :O

In this instance, I'd do the logical thing and take the belt to a local motorfactors - as there is always something that runs a suitable fitment and you'll get it at about half price also! :) Old trick but still well worth trying.

Anyway, doesn't suprise me at all really. A 6" long piece of fuel pipe went on the Cherokee. Took them over 2 weeks to order, have it delivered, fitted and returned to us. Absolutely appalling, considering that anyone could have fixed it in 20 seconds with Halfords parts.

Unfortunately they'd diagnosed the problem and consequently to maintain the warranty it had to be done by them...

Wise man say "simple things, not always in stock..."....

Yep, if my catalogues are correct, we keep one in stock here at work. Most motorfactors should, its fairly size common belt.

Hi,

Not that the RAC who towed me had one anyway but they said they wouldn't fit a replacement as it needed to be done by Nissan to maintain the warranty???? How the hell would anyone know if I, Joe bloggs or anyone else for that matter had put a new belt on. I'm not a mechanic but does it require any special skills then?

I think the thing is no one would expect it to fail like that unless it was a defective part on a car that new I guess so they 'need to check it'

I don't have access to the car now as it was towed and is being stored at the Nissan dealer

I could harp on about the good old days and some old dear would give you her stockings to fix it but it's 2008 fgs - ridiculous.

I know that I love the car to bits but if every time something simple goes wrong I'm gonna be without the car for xxx days then it will a boring run of the mill car for me.

I guess the problem is there isn't a replacement part in the UK.

So? When I VOR stuff from Sweden it's in my hand within 24 hours. That's the whole poing of the VOR (Vehicle Off Road) network. Understandable to allow a little longer for Japan, but NOT 6 days.

Just to update this - I've now been given a time scale of 24th for the fan belt. Good init - drop to dealer 14th and now 24th at the earliest for a simple bit of rubber.

Impressed @ Nissan - not!!

If you think that's bad, there's no supply of 19inch rear tyres for boxsters atm (and 987's don't have a spare) so everyone calling porsche assist for recovery is getting a loan car while they wait (weeks) for a single tyre :D
