So Capello is saying naming his captain is the most important decision as manager.

Who do you think he'll go for? Obviously Terry is injured at the moment so for the short term someone will be selected, do you think he has any reason to change it for the long term from Terry? And vice captain from Gerrard?

Discuss...

If he was going to stick with Terry I reckon he'd have done it by now.

Who could he give it too though? There's talk of Owen, but why? I don't think Owen has a big enough influence on his team mates. There is only Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand, Cole and Rooney who are experienced regulars. I don't think any of them are worthy tbh.

Doubt it will be Owen. I think he may be one of the guys to suffer from a new manager coming in and will be lucky to make the squad when everybody else is fit.

Probably wrong but its a suspicion I have.

I think Ferdinand is possibly a contender. Cappello has been to two United games (from my knowledge) and in both we've kept clean sheets and Ferdinand has been faultless.

I'd say Gerrard is probably the favourite though. Either of those two or Terry will get it I reckon. No chance of Owen getting it.

He may have been convicted of some things but he has never been proven to be a drug taker so cut it out - Rotty

As for the captaincy, Gerrard, Ferdinand or Terry are the only real options

I don't like Terry at all though, but cant deny he's a top defender and captain, not always the case for his country though, but that goes for any player in the England team

if i offended you i'm truly sorry but i firmly believe that he should'nt be considered as he was banned missing a drugs test ... i did not comment on his footballing abilities anywhere in my post and i think he's actually a good defender

I'm sorry, since when has it been proven that Rio took drugs?

Stop talking rubbish.

It's proven that he's irresponsible, and that he's set a bad example to other players.

It's a shame really, I think he'd make an OK captain but what he's done has tainted his reputation. He'd be captain of United now if it wasn't for that.

Not neccesarily. He hasn't actually had the England squad together yet to see how they interact, and surely whoever ends up the loudest voices when they're together will be strong contenders to be captain.

I'd be torn between Gerrard and Ferdinand, myself. Gerrard may be a bit more of a gamble, depending on how Capello bothers to play the team (he may not even get a starting place), and Stevie's indifferent England form, but the captaincy may be the push to finally get him into life for the team. Ferdinand is simply the best leader out of the other available first-teamers. I'd give Rooney a chance if he weren't so young, and still a bit too hot-headed.

Terry is easily the best choice, he's the best player in his position so will be picked when fit and the best leader on the park.

Leaving him aside for a second the next choice would be Gerrard, but you could only pass it to him in the hope that it would galvanise him to play well for his country in the same way it did for Beckham. Given his club form Gerrard has been one of the lowest performers in an England shirt for years.

The only other choice is Ferdinand, and as has been said he's tainted himself with his recent history and he's not the leader the others are.

He's vice captain at the moment with Giggs as captain and Neville being out and scores scorching vollies when hes captain ;)

Beckham will get his 100th cap as captain then its Ferdinand for me after that

Wrong !!!!

Never charged with taking drugs, he was banned for missing a test

And Wrong !!!

He was stripped of his vice captaincy because of meeting Peter Kenyon in a London restaurant.

Oh and other than not being a drinker and disgracing himself in public like some high profile footballers and doing loads of work for charity, yes he really does set a bad example ;)

As for the captaincy, I think it should be Terry as he is a good leader of his team as is Gerrard. However on the occasions that Terry has been out and England needed a big performance from their stand in Captain, Gerrard has rarely delivered the performance required.

Rio has matured a hell of a lot over the last few years and for me he is worthy to be the vice captain to John Terry. I would also give him the captaincy of the club from next season also

You can't even think of giving it Ferdinand with his history, TBH I would leave it as it is

One thing in Gerrard's favour though is that when he became Liverpool captain it moved his game on to another level

Shame he didn't move onto that next level against Croatia!
