Radeon HD 3870 X2 Launch On Jan 23rd, Costs US$449

Isn't it a bit complicated though since from what i know Crossfire allows 2 normal cards like the 3850 to run together. Does normal Crossfire support two 3870x2? Since it's two physical cards but 4 cores in total. And if so does CrossfireX allow the use of 4 of these babies ( 3870x2 ) at the same time? :D

Well $449 converts to about £228 here, now we know it wont be that, but i reckon we could be looking around £280, which won't be bad at all. :p

American prices are Ex Vat which are much lower than europe anyway. So $449 is really £268 which means that it will be ~£300.

This is what I was asking. You need to remember it's going to show up as 4 separate cards.

449 = ~£225 so its likely to be 260-280 i think??

edit: oh wait i think i see what you mean.

would be so damn funny to see 4 x 3870X2

With the current design, it's impossible to 4X 3870X2's. Look at the pictures, and you will see the 3870X2 only has one crossfire tab (connector) on the top of the card. So you can only physically use 2X 3870X2's.

If they added another tab, then sure... 3 and 4 way crossfire x would be 'physically' possible, but then the driver would have to support 6 and 8 GPU's, and you'd have to have one ALMIGHTY CPU in order to supply enough data to keep it happy.

I'm expecting massive disappointment from the prices we'll see in the UK.
A situation like this...

I'm still on for one of these then!, you think we will get confirmation on actual price and REAL benchmarks before they are released?

would you not be able to run a setup with 2 3870x2's and 2 3870's then?

eg

3870x2____3870-----3870____3870x2

Cheapest 3870 i have seen in the UK is £140 so £280 for xfire. It would be stupid to charge more then that for an X2 so i think the price point will probably be about the £250-260 mark to encourage people to buy the new card but you never know maybe they are dumber then they sound.

there is no way ati will release this card at more expensive prices than 2 single 3870`s would make no sence

It does cost more to make though because of the PCI-E splitter chip it has.
And it can do something that 2x 3870s can't do and that is to be usable on a motherboard that doesn't support crossfire :) (at least it seems that way)

The new revision P35 DS4 (rev 2.1 iirc) has crossfirex capability.

Bit of a pain really considering i have only just got the normal DS4 (still normal xfire capable though).

Now the question is how much will we be bent over by here in the uk. Currency converter says £228 or so for a direct conversion. Can guarantee its not gonna retail for under £250 or so. If theres adequate stock then i dont see any reason why first day prices should be higher..but we know how things work.

I rekon adding £50 to the US prices is a good guess for UK prices. I'm betting a price range of between £250 - £320, I'll remember that for when its released ;)

£320 they can ram it, i'll order it from america if it hits anywhere near that over here. Imo even £275 is tearing the ass out of it.
