Anyone got any thoughts on the above two cars and how they compare?
Clearly both will be economical, the Honda is probably more reliable, and I'm guessing the mk2 Focus will be more fun to drive.
Any thoughts on living with each and things like ride quality, noise levels at speed, etc?

The 1.7 Civic diesel was Hondas first diesel. As a consequence, it is really not very good, in much the same way that Microsofts first version of Windows wasn't all that.

Useful feedback, thanks.
I understand that the Focus can be had as a 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 diesel. If you assume that performance is NOT high on the agenda, and that smoothness and economy are more important, how do the engines come out?

I got a 2.0 tdci 130 model, I tested a 1.6 tdci, and wasn't too impressed with the power, didn't look at the ecomomy but I'd assume it would be better than the 2.0, but the 2.0 130bhp model comes with a 6th gear which is good for ecomomy on the motorway and its pretty smooth but 1st gear is too short which is annoying in traffic (I normally use 2nd gear in traffic now lol)

There are quite a few reports of diesel pump and injector failure on those TDCI engines at high mileages. Common rail direct injection technology is really at an early stage of development, particular with those TDCI engines, and it doesn't seem if they've got long term reliability licked yet.

Wrong im affraid they did a 2.0 diesel civic in the mb shape , dont know if its any good though . thats my imput im affraid

When I was looking for a car to replace the girlfriends car, I tried most of the TDCI engines (1.6, 2.0 & 2.2). The 1.6 felt pretty gutless and slower than the 2.0 110bhp HDI in her 307 SW even although they were rated the same power and 1.6 was in a lighter Focus. The 2L TDi is far more pokey with less lag low down and moved a C-Max along at a respectable pace, the 2.2 felt only very slighlty quicker in a Mondeo but was smoother and less lag than the 2.0L. Work mate as a current shape 115bhp TDCI Focus which I think is a 1.8 and he regrets not getting the 2L TDCi.

Both of those were Isuzu engines which Honda simply fettled.

According to Honda the 2.2 i-CTDi is their first diesel engine.
