Games Piracy - What's your take on it?

I agree with the OP.

I have bought three copies of CoD4 for people who couldn't afford it.

Its a great game and I totally love it, especially the MP part of it.

PS. No! I ain't gonna buy you a copy :)

Going by most of this thread, most of us download games illegally.

So next time you (when I say you, I don't mean anyone specific) play a game that doesn't work as expected and requires a patch or update, or is a cheap console port or just hasn't lived up to the expectations, bear in mind the funding restrictions imposed by piracy. After all, all games, no matter who the developer, is producing a game to make a profit. If the budget is cut because of piracy forcast which risks the profit, then the quality of the game has to be cut. It doesn't make sense that a developer should make a loss.

Yep 100% agreed with the above, you can't have it both ways.

Even worse they just won't bother with the PC

The PC Gaming Market Also Drives the majority of hardware upgrades with out the games the hardware market especially the graphics segment may see a huge slow down.

What system would you have know if there were no games to push the hardware forward?

600mhz 32mb of ram 10gb HDD :P

Don't see the point of paying £20 for single player, 7-10 hours content doesn't make it worth it.

We pay a ridiculous amount for (decent quality) broadband here in the UK, may as well make the most of it, can get the full game by the time I've waited on capped bandwidth for a demo.

If it's that good and/or has a recommended multiplayer, I'll buy it, not from retail shops or digital download mind, twice as expensive.

I also rent all console games, £19 a month and usually go through anything from 2 to 10, saves god know how much ££.

Chicken or egg? It's not the devs I have the problem with so much as the money men and publishers.
Ubisoft game making practices: Announce game big hoo hah, marketing budgets set and release date set in stone to coincide with the marketing. Hurry up dev team. dev team cut features and corners because of pressure. Focus on console version the PC doesn't have an quality control and we can patch it later. More cajoling and hurrying and product is released unfinished. Ubi stick on a copy protection system which causes massive problems to the end user. Instead of work continuing to truly finish the game the Dev team is downsized broken up and reassigned. Two guys are assigned patching duties and told to fix the biggest bugs.

Some how I don't see that happening. The PC gaming market is massive and even with piracy, I can't see developers cutting us PC gamers out.

I hate to say but its happening already. Look at Condemned released on PC and 360, its sequel, console only. Or how about the Tony Hawks series? doesn't even get a PC release any more. At the moment we're seeing greatly delayed releases for PC games (Assassins Creed, Gears of War, Viva Pinata, GTA series, Mass Effect (if it will happen)) But unfortunately i can quickly see those going if the piracy problem continues.

the biggest problem is that teams now need to be very big to accommodate graphics/physics team + the gameplay/story etc team. and it turns out people judge books by their covers so like graphics more, so they use a standard gameplay/story and stick a bunch more money into the graphics and cut the gameplay aspect.

I'll eat several hats if piracy ever comes close to actually killing off any kind of entertainment industry.

The only thing that really hurts most industries are the greedy regulatory bodies like RIAA and MPAA.

I couldn't agree more. Which is why Valve have got it spot on.

i dunno why but most of you thing only about PC games and movies,

the consoles that you can get backups working on that i know are:

Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 1, PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360, PSP, Nintendo DS, GBA,

also remember about all the EMULATION, so many great old console games you can play on your pc for free + arcade games,

i know people that ever only used modified consoles, they cant afford original games (not in UK), i don’t mind paying for some console games even though they are so expensive, but i remember having my old xbox modified, great times i had so many games on it :cool::cool:

I never understand this point, there are very few forms of entertainment that offer such good value (only dvd tv box sets).

take gears of war I paid £25 for it I played it for about 6hrs in total that's about £4.20 an hour

now mass effect again I paid £25 I played it for about 60hrs so thats about 42p an hour.

God knows what the orange box would work out at but either way it's good value, especially when you look at the cost of going to the football ,cinema, pub or even a music cd.

I think the last pirated game I played was Black and White, at college. Some girl handed it to me on disc one day at halls.

Since then never really. I'm also the same with DVD's. My friend downloads lots of films, new releases too. He gives me them to watch, which I admit to doing. However I never keep them, and either go to pay to see them at cinema if it was really good or on DVD likewise. It bugs me not having a proper case etc

It's because its software and people automatically think it costs next to nothing to produce each individual cd/dvd and so it should be sold for like £1 or whatever. They forget completely about the development costs.

Take XP or Vista for example. People complain that at £100 (or whatever) that its a waste of money and a total rip off. Yet arguably, is there anything else on your computer that gets more use, over a longer period of time?

Lets say you use your computer for 2 hours a day (not very much for most people here).
And assume that you upgrade O/S once every 3 years (I'd guess it would be longer than this for most people)

So your £100 O/S gets used for 2190 hours over its lifetime. You are paying less than 5p/hour for it and yet people still try to say its a total rip off!

If all the people who openly admitted pirating games, dvds and music on here had their IPs logged and sent to HM revenue and customs I'd love to see how their appaulingly flawed arguements stand up to a visit to their property.

Some of the justifications I've read in this thread are absolutely shocking. So a lot of you steal property from games developers but what happens if the games developer did the same thing to digital information you have or broke into your house and stole your belongings which you made.

Different story when the shoe is on the other foot I expect...

Trading standards mate, not really a customs things.
