Leslie Ash wins record £5million - not £500,000 - payout over hospital's MRSA blunder

Actress Leslie Ash has won a record £5 million payout - well in excess of the £500,000 Ash was initially reported to have been awarded - after nearly dying from a superbug infection.

Her lawyers said the former Men Behaving Badly star was “delighted” with the huge lump sum agreement.

It does not include £250,000 in legal fees for the cost of the lawsuit.

Janice Gardner, from Russell-Cooke solicitors, said: “This is a significant settlement which recognises that Leslie has been seriously injured and compromised.

“She is delighted that the legal action is now over. It's been an incredible strain for her.” Ms Gardner added that Ash, who is married to retired footballer Lee Chapman, would continue to campaign on behalf of other patients who had contracted hospital infections.

“She has been campaigning on this issue since she fell ill,” the lawyer said. “This compensation highlights the seriousness of the case.”

Ash is expected to receive the money within the next 28 days from Chelsea and Westminster NHS trust.

The actress was a patient at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital when she contracted the MRSA infection.

She was admitted in April 2004 with a punctured lung and two broken ribs. Ash told doctors she fell out of bed after a frantic sex session with her husband. She had an epidural as part of her treatment and a few days later found she had no feeling from her chest down.

The actress, who still needs a stick to walk, described the impact the infection had had on her career in a High Court writ served on the hospital.

Does she really deserve so much money from the taxpayer?

Maybe she shouldn't have had the kind of 'frantic sex' which results in serious injuries? Although whether that is what actually happened is debatable, allegedly...

She nearly died from MRSA.. she was entitled to that money. Loss of earnings, damages (both physical and mental) etc.

One has to ask what kind of frantic sex session ends up with broken ribs and a punctured lung, but I WANNA GO :p

All compensation payouts bother me anyway. Who do you think picks up the bill? The taxpayer.

I'm not saying that what happened was fine, but it's not going to solve anything.

No, but it will help out given Leslie is no longer able to work.

Ugly trout faced bitch.

Compensation is alright seeing as she's unable to work in her line of work. But £500,000 is quite a lot. She can still do something else other than acting...

Edit: If it is £5 million then I simply think that's disgusting. But not sure due to contradictory sources!

That's not the point though, the NHS's blunder has caused her to be unable to carry on with her career, it has dramatically effected her earning potential. As such the compensation is justified. Of course, as it comes from the taxpayer, there will be no incentive for the NHS to improve, which renders the whole system flawed.

Christ. Let's say she lives until she's 80, she's basically been handed a £135k a year salary courtesy of the taxpayer. That's too much.

would you argue it was too much if it was a private company? £135k a year is also not that much for a popular actress to earn...

She wouldn't work until she was 80 anyway, probably not even 60. How popular is she really? How much does she earn for her TV appearances?

More to the point, why should someone get more money just because they earn more? Bear in mind that if you lose a limb in a work accident you get a few measly grand in compensation off the state.

You mean if it's a private company paying her the compensation? Then no. Taking £5 million from the NHS is in nobody's interests but her own.

As for earnings of popular actresses, i've no idea. I'd probably say all actors earn too much :p
