Leslie Ash gets record £5 million compensation from NHS

Plus the damages awarded in your successful employer's liability claim..

She wouldn't work until she was 80 anyway, probably not even 60. How popular is she really? How much does she earn for her TV appearances?

More to the point, why should someone get more money just because they earn more? Bear in mind that if you lose a limb in a work accident you get a few measly grand in compensation off the state.

But you can sue the workplace if they have been negligent and get more. That's the key thing here, this is a payment following court action for the NHS not doing their job properly (as they have admitted).

And yes, if you've worked hard to gain a higher earnings potential and negligence by another party affects that, it should be taken into account.

You mean if it's a private company paying her the compensation? Then no. Taking £5 million from the NHS is in nobody's interests but her own.

Why the difference? Why hold state run services to a different (lesser) standard to privately run ones? We already have the problem that the state run services have no desire to improve through lack of competative working, why make that situation worse by making them lack more responsibility than their private counterparts for their actions? If the reward was justified, it was justified, irrespective of the source.

As for earnings of popular actresses, i've no idea. I'd probably say all actors earn too much :p

They probably do, but that's not relevant to the discussion.

I would imagine that Hospitals are insured for this type of thing? So surely it would be the Underwriters who would pay out and not the NHS or Tax payers directly.

Ridiculous amount for anyone to receive though, no matter how much they earn or could have earned.

I thought the government (taxpayer) underwrote insurance claims in the NHS, not the private sector.

Wouldn't be £5 fricking million though would it :p And losing a limb is worse than what she is enduring - walking with a stick? Boohoo.

It would if you had a decent earnings potential and high expected ongoing treatments costs...

As for the last comment, I'm guessing you don't know any chronic pain sufferers, no amount of money can help with that.

Lots of people have chronic pain or a hard life, do they all get £5m to help make things easier... no they don't because they aren't 'celebrities'...

Alternatively they don't because their potential earnings haven't been impacted as much?

Surely 5million only further restricts hospital budgets. Budgets which need to be spent on cleaning staff which already paid the bare minimum and therefore are most likely not too bothered bout the job they do.
