Thinking about buying a PSP, mainly to hook up to my PS3 but also the odd game or movie for when I'm away.

Is there any pro's/con's about getting one from Japan?

And ... The new Mint Green one, or a White one? :p (Don't like the silver and my old one was black)

I think a Japanese one won't play UMD movies from here (could be wrong on that, I know with DVDs we were the same region, but I think it's different for UMDs). All games are completely region free, so there's no problem there.

edit- According to Wikipedia I'm wrong. Japan and Europe are the same region. Both games and movies should work fine.

The obvious Con is one of warranty if it breaks etc (It doesn't have a worldwide warranty as far as I know), apart from that the normal risks with importing/tax etc. Everything else will work as a UK one would, I would just buy a UK one for peace of mind tbh. There is one guy on MM selling a less than 1 week old UK one.
Why do people hook them to the PS3, whats it let you do?
It lets you stream any video, music, pictures, ps1 games, browse PSN, check, messages etc from your ps3, either in your house or over the internet.

Yeah I think your right rp2000, about the warranty etc. - It's just the green ones look cool and it used to be the case that the Asian ones had better screens when they were launched, I guess thats not the case now?

Think I will just get a White UK one, Can anyone recommend a game to take away on holiday too? I was thinking Final Fantasy, and that Crush looks cool too.

The streaming PS1 games to PSP sounds good.

Shame I don't own a PS3, as i'm buying a lite tomorrow or in next few days :D

The screens were manufactured by Sharp for JAP models originally and Samsung for rest of world (or other way round or some variation). This situation lasted 6 months I think (1 company makes all screens now) and as to whether the screen was "better" was highly contentious as it is a very subjective issue dependent on the individual.

For me the biggest issue is dead pixels. If bought in the UK from the right shop you will be able to swap it.

I know I can't pimp my own MM sales, but I can't see why I can;t pimp this guy selling what I think is a good deal.

I know one of these catalogue shops has a 16 day money back guarantee which a mate has used to return a PSP that had 3 dead pixels. That is your best bet, and the option I picked when getting my slim and lite. (You know you can get both the Black and White one in Slim and Lite variety in the UK?).

Yeah just like the white one really, did like the new Jap green one, but as you say not worth it for warranty issues.

Don't forget, in the UK we have that... what's it called, Distance Selling Regulation, whereby you can return any item before 7 days are up, even if it's been used. (But still in as new perfect condition)

That way, if it had dead pixels you could still return it, and then get another one from elsewhere?

PSP = Burnout on the Toilet for the win!

EDIT: I'm sure Distance Selling Regulations are law now, aren't they? I remember reading about them in a magazine a little while ago. Google will have more, I'm sure, or I just found this page

Anyway, using distance selling regs, you could ensure you snag a PSP with no dead pixels.. if that's a problem these days?

one or two dead pixels wouldn't bother me as long as they're not too badly noticeable, My launch PSP had 2 or 3 and you could only see them if it was a pure white screen.

Thanks for the tips guys :)

You're more fogiving than me.
I hate dead pixels... or worse, those little flickery ones.. one of my mobile phones had that once.

As you say, all depends how they bother you.
If you came to sell it in the future, with dead pixels, that wouldn't be so easy!

I'd either go to a shop, and ask to test it/make sure it's ok to return it in case of dead pixels, or, use the distance selling regs if ordered from the internet, if the store won't replace it.
