Seems pretty good for Microsoft anyway. Are PS2s still selling reasonably well? And what about the hand-helds? I know they're not "this generation" - but it's still money for the Manufacturers. I'm not all that surprised that 360 is way ahead - the wii's a lot cheaper and both wii and PS3 don't seem to have anything like the catalogue of games available for 360.

Also, it doesn't mention PC sales for the multiplatform games at all.

Is the 360 actually making a profit now then? I know MS made its first ever profit from their Xbox adventures with the launch of Halo 3, but as this continued or has it dropped back down into the red?

This is why I always think it's best to wait for NPD rather than the guess work of vgchartz or relying on Sony PR.

"The PlayStation brand ended the year in a very strong position and clearly indicates more positive momentum going into 2008. We are particularly pleased to have sold through 1.2 million units of PS3 during the holiday selling season," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. "The strong PS3 sales also further establish Blu-ray's dominant position as the high-definition medium of choice for games and movies. Consumers are clearly responding to the expanding multimedia capabilities and a great line-up of over 200 games."

or people buying a 2nd because they cannot be bothered to fix their old console or through fear of failure on their 1st console or for modding purposes

Lol, I see the SDF are in full swing this morning!

Some more figures that shows the industry as a whole has seen a huge gain on last year.

Industry Totals
Dec-07 CHG
Video Games $4.82 billion 28%
Video Games Hardware $1.83 billion 17%
Console Hardware $1.3 billion 21%
Portable Game Hardware $525.7K 7%
Video Games Software $2.37 billion 36%
Console Software $1.8 billion 47%
Portable Game Software $574.9K 11%
Video Game Accessories $621.6K 37%

SDF to the rescue, lol

Ps3 outsold xbox360 in its 1st year - these figures in OP are all very well and good but you need to remember that if anyone is comparing like for like against xbox360 and PS3 well its to be expected that the 360 is doing so well with it being out over two years!, and is in full swing. I'm more interested in if the 360 can keep momentum over the comming year or two as some anaylists are already pedicting slowdown for the console which is to be expected and is already happening

PS3's will out sell the 360 and Wii in the long run, I see it being the better of the 3 by 2009 easily, GTA4 alone will boost PS3 sales insanely

I think GTA IV has been MS's secret weapon all along for 2008. I expect a $100 price cut and massive PR campaign to cooincide with it's launch.

always wonders about MS's figures how many are returned faulty console exchanges

Surely that's irrelevent, though, when it comes to amount of money made?

Anywho, this will be the year of the PS3, which will probably overtake the 360 in terms of consoles sold towards the end of the year.

Dont actually think the sold through numbers are that far off TBH, the 1.2 million PS3 is from black friday (23rd November) till end off December. So with the approx 320K from the 2 weeks in Novembers it would only leave approx 100K in the channels and in stores. Not sure but i think North America also includes Canada sales whereas these NPD are US only, Canada's come out a few days later.
THe VGchartz are not to far off iff you look at what they said and the NPD's

NPD USA Est. NPD Total Vgchartz VGC/NPD Est
DS 2,470,000 2,650,310 2,876,040 1.08
Wii 1,350,000 1,453,950 1,638,849 1.13
360 1,260,000 1,349,460 1,289,156 0.96
PS2 1,100,000 1,162,700 951,764 0.82
PSP 1,060,000 1,118,300 960,885 0.86
PS3 797,600 876,562 774,795 0.88

So they was only 15% out Max, not bad for a free service, also dont forget NPD are still estimates and do not include sales figures from several big US stores and prob the biggest worldwide online store, so NPDs are still estimates. I would always rely on the Company statements rather NPD as they are far more reliable, and they cannot just make up numbers as these numbers will effect stock prices, company strategy etc , NPDs are still very good guesses not total fact.

I guessed the Wii is still suffering from supply shortages, as i expected to see a lot more Wii sales in the US than that, even though its still High.
The 360 had good hardware Sales and great Software sales, pretty much the market leader in the US.
Shame that only the US release Data like this as the story in Japan and the EU / other regions is quite different.
Think that 2008 will be even bigger regarding sales of consoles and software, but probably not as big as leap as from 2006-2007.

Which is why it is more important to look at software sales rather than hardware sales. It does seem that the 360 is doing considerably better than the PS3 in software sales.

At the end of the day both are good consoles and do the job so I am not sure why people get so defensive over their chosen hardware.

Wonder if MS will pay an insane amount to stick a 360 logo at the end of the ads?...a la Assassins Creed and PS3?

Love it when Microsoft try to put positive spin on bad news. They might have a larger share of the total consumer spending, but this could be equally explained away by the fact that the 360 was for much of the year £100 more expensive than the Wii. Plus they've totally ripped their customers off with the HD-DVD drive that will soon be obsolete and need replacing with the BluRay version ;)
