Beijing 2008 Aquatic Centre

I'm looking forward to the olympics, I've always done so but this year is special; I wonder how many Engrish / Chinglish we'll be getting out of such global event.

Edit: Just saw some of their other event venues and is it me or is there an obsession with cube-like buildings? e.g. the Basketball venue

yep. Most brits would call that a waste of money. I swear english people would rather live in square concrete buildings rather than investing in new and cool stuff. That brings new business and tourism into the country.

They are trying hard and I give them that - but you have to bear in mind, they've basically a blank canvas to start laying "New Tech" and "New Stuff" that we all drool over and wonder why we can't have it here instead.

Plus, all these cool stuff is good and all but if their PSI / air condition over there don't improve, you'll get tourist wearing gas mask whilst touring through these magnificent spots.

It's going to be a good Olympic swimming meet this year. Just very annoying that NBC have been able to get the finals switched from the evening to first thing in the morning China local time. Means we over here (UK) get it at some awful hour and the Americans get it prime-time

Ah maybe, but don't forget that building something like that under our corrupt regime would cost at least 10 times as much as it would anywhere else in the World. Just take the new Wembley as a prime example.

Hmmmm, i think you'll find that in such a labour intensive industry much as construction that wages will account for a massive increase in compartive costs, as would the money major contractors spend on health and safety.

It's still worth the cost IMO.
The amount we waste on other projects. we need statues, landmarks, buildings etc. Something most people do not appreciate and think is a waste of money.

100% gorgeous, they really know how to do it. Massive props to the architects & engineers.

Having said that... it's amazing what you can achieve when you don't have to worry about safety standards, minimum wage, workers' rights, etc. Just crack the whip and make 'em do it.

British engineering died with Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Now it's all just mass-produced Legoland tat.

The airport has a British architect, so even if we can't build stuff we can still design it.

Indeed, but things are gradually changing towards more exciting projects - eg - glass extension on tate modern. China will have cheaper materials and dirt cheap labour too so can prob afford to have more complex designs. Looks good now but with all the pollution, I reckon, they won't look as good afterwards.

Yeah, buildings in China are great, escpecially when they demolish your house to make way for them! I believe the designer was Sir Norman Foster, so it is infact British!
