From a competitor so not sure I can post prices

but Canon 400D + EFS 18-56mm kit lens

Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD Macro (Canon AF)

UV Filter 58mm

DSLR Camera Bag

This comes to just over half a grand.

This will be my first DSLR but I have a lot of experience of using point and shoot things (10k+ shots)

I'm hoping that the canon is slightly better than the nikon d40x but I don't know really.

I've already bought a 4gb compactflash card for it as well.

Since i'm a first timer i doubt i'm going to be disappointed with either the nikon or the canon.

BTW is that Tamron lens any good? for a beginner?

Also i've read that the kit lens for the 400d isn't as good the one for the nikon d40x's so should i change that straight away or leave it for the time being?

the kit lens is ok and not totally useless i used it for quite a while before upgrading. get used to the camera with it.
As for the Tamron i belive that my friend has the same one which i have used once or twice but feel its a bit slow in focus. im not sure as for optical quality though as not really examined the results
 
The Tamron 70-300mm isn't to bad a lens, but the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG MACRO
is considered the best in that price bracket.

I realise that tamron lens isn't the best by a long shot but I've never owned a DSLR before so in that sense i'm unlikely to be disappointed yeah?

Well that depends on what you're expecting it to be able to do for you and how you use it. A dSLR can take a far worse or a far better image than a P&S camera with equal ease - in many cases making the lens irrelevant.

The Sigma APO DG Macro is considered by most to be the best in that field and is excellent value for money really. If you can stretch to it, then it's recommended, but that's up to your wallet.
