What is so good about Civ4?

After hearing lots of people saying how good it is, I went out and bought the complete pack.

After playing it a bit, I honestly couldn't see what was good about it. It seemed to take a massive number of turns to build anything, units don't get very far, and combat isn't exactly exhilarating. Compared to similar games like Rome:Total War, this really is quite slow and dull and I find I don't really have much to do in the game other than wait for stuff to build.

So honest question, what am I missing here? Or is the game just not right for me?

probably just not for you.
i used to play civ 3 for a long while. got 4, didn't like it and haven't played 3
since either.

Manage your cities?
Listenting to your advisers

the game is so in depth and its not really about the combat

Is it Civilization 4 that you've heard good things about??

Or is it Civilization as a series?

Because to be honest, The series is God Like, But has never improved over the first 1 in my opinion. The old DOS game, With Chess/Checker like pieces. Awesome Classic.

2 was good, But the cheat menu was too addictive for me.

3 was awesome, And I never played 4 very much. Because it was around that time my graphics card took a nose dive.

But as said, The game is very strategic, and none action. It's closer to a game of chess. And may just not be your kind of game

It's just pure strategy, not eye candy...

It's with the toughness and some people just can't stop turning till ** @ night...
The game still is a challenge even if you've played for years, you need perfect turns even one turn can make the difference between defeat and win, as small as changes in 1 turn may seem to look.

You have to like just building up a country etc too.

If you don't like pure strategy then tbh it's not the game for you, try perhaps finishing one game on noble or prince difficulty, after than if you still hate it give up.

I'm like you.

I didn't find anything interesting in it really, every game I seemed to play ended with either a space race or me being wiped out completely, and I found I just generally got bored of it after 10 hours of playing. Haven't touched it since.

That sounds to me like you missed the point, and I mean that with all due respect.

It's a strategy game, so it's about skill and patience. Keep playing until you do not get wiped out, or until you can get a victory other than space race (you didn't specify if it was you who won.) When you can play through every difficulty and come out victorious, then to me you have used up the game and achieved the goal, but if you can't persist at this then I'd say that the game is just not for you.

Edit: That said I'm still on noble and prince, it'll be a long time before I wear out this game.

I can see why some people don't like Civ, but there is no better game of it's type that I've discovered yet.

If you want something a bit more 'direct' and simplistic, try Civ2. 3 and 4 are a bit more balanced with less focus on technology and military conquest.

It can be hard to play, or get into. Try a couple of games, but if you don't get into it I wouldn't waste your time.

I have played it since I was a child, and it is very adictive. I play at Monarch however I don't play anywhere near as much these days. I don't like to play short games, but rarely have time for marathon / huge games these days.

*Sigh*

Civ 2 is the best one imo although the gfx are very dated its a brilliant game

Got Alpa Centri and then Civ 4 but not as good but had to describe why, in fact think I'll find my civ2 disc now, good old days of playing after tea and then seeing the sun rising!!

Although the gfx on civ4 are good!

Do you remember a Game called Constructor, that was addictive.
