hi ppl

i like the tests and temp readings that have been dun with a Thermaltake Big Typ VX120 . i have an abit aa8xe fatality m/board and need a cpu cooler and wonder if anyones heard of any probs with regards to fitting or its size or compatabilty with this particular board.

any advice much appreciated thanks in advance :)

p.s also is arctic silver 5 still the best sludge to use between the cpu and heatsink

heya,

i noticed that cooler too and second that request if anyone knows anything about it.

The airflow ratings are immense from the product description!

:-)

Hi robozric,

Welcome to the forums, make sure to read the forum rules and enjoy your stay! :)

I haven't used the Thermaltake Big Typ VX120 but its results so look good for a horizontal cooler and the heatpipes appear to be quite vertical so hopefully would clear any obstructions near the CPU socket.

Is this your motherboard below? or is the layout similar? spacing doesn't look to bad although the top right hole looks a bit cramped, the blue northbridge heatsink also looks like its sticking up quite a bit and is quite close to the CPU socket.

ye thats the one ye looking at it possibly could cause a problem with that northbridge cooler and the top right corner should be fine as the otes surround is off at the moment .

arctic silver still the best stuff to use?

Yes arctic silver is still one of the best TIMs around although you could get involved in a very long and drawn out debate as to which is the very best TIM, bottom line is your not likely to see a great deal of difference between them as long as you've applied the TIM correctly.

ill go with the as5 then

was also looking at the board and i may see if i can swap the northbridge fan to the other side of it and free up a few extra millimeters

Had the earlier version of this big bugger which used a backplate and then thumbscrews from the top which were a sod to actually fit as it's awkward to get under the top of the sink with my board due to all the heatpipe malarky(gigabye 965p-ds4) but the newer VX version should be easier as it uses the Intel sylee push clips, other than that it had about 30mm or so of clearance from the fins to the top of the cpu area and cleared all the cooling bits on mine, it did a pretty good job imho my temps (c2d) @ 2.8 were around 32 idle 55 load iirc and the supplied fan was almost silent - well i couldnt hear it above the other 4x fans and 6x hdd's anyway.

Just a thought but what about the Scythe andy Samurai ? actually looking at that myself.

As for gunge, either AS5 or Ceramique still seem to be the best/favourite.

HTH

ive decided to go with the typhoon tbh im pretty sure it will be fine ive dun a bit of measuring and stuff and i think it will be fine.

thx for all your input and time guys

ill post after i fit it (crosses fingers ) and let u know how it goes.
