It's a musical. Please know this before you watch. Good screenplay, gory too, but it is a musical. I hate musicals. It should have been a film.

Went to the advanced previews this evening, enjoyed it very much. Although its a musical I'd say its 50/50 with normal talking/singing.

EDIT: Do'h Spie! :( The girlfriend had the same problem, 5 minutes into this film and I get a nudge, "wait, this is a musical? I hate musicals" eek!

Not quite. The musical was quite recent. The first Sweeney Todd film appeared in 1936 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweeney_Todd:_The_Demon_Barber_of_Fleet_Street_(1936_film)

Wikipedia said:
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a 2007 film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler musical of the same name.

As I said, the film is based on the popular musical.

edit - In fact, it states as much on the promotional posters, albeit in the small spiel at the bottom that no one usually reads :p

But the film came first, and "based" on a musical in no way implies it is a musical. Usually musicals have the keyword "musical" prominently in their advertising blurb (not teeny text you can't read), just to let people know they can definitely expect a fair amount of singing. I didn't see that anywhere.

I normally like Johnny Depp, but not so sure about this one... whenever he does an English accent it just sounds like Jack Sparrow all over again.

Agree that this should've just been a movie rather than a musical - would've considered it then. As it is, I'll probably get dragged along by the missus kicking and screaming to go and see this.

You have a point there, it isn't prominently mentioned on the poster or the trailer, though it is mentioned in virtually every review i've seen, on the wiki page and on IMDB.

Summary from www.myvue.com

Synopsis

Victorian England is the setting for this harrowing melodrama. Benjamin Barker is living a simple life as a barber with his wife Lucy and his daughter Johanna when the lust of a judge throws all of their lives into chaos. The judge has Benjamin Barker deported to Australia, and it is many years later that he returns to England, under the pseudonym Sweeney Todd with revenge on his heart. He wishes to reclaim his family and punish the judge and the society who destroyed it. With the help of Mrs. Lovett a pie shop owner who had known Sweeney and his family all of those years ago, Sweeney goes about seeking vengeance and reaping the benefits of that bloody journey.

Nope, no mention of it being a musical. I don't like watching trailers just in case it spoils the film. This time it was essential.

Spie is correct - Sweeney Todd is a short story and a play from 1850ies, made into silent movie in 1926, then 1928, then again in 1936. It's relatively recent development to see demon barber of Fleet Street bursting on request into cheerful tunes in the middle of conversations or murderous acts without any particular reason... ;)

Think I may have to go and see this!
Not really into musicals but as long as the singing is much better than the Phantom of the Opera film (I switched off only a few bars into the first song the singing was so bad - something I don't normally do!).

I agree ,what could have been a great film has been ruined

Could always give it a chance before writing it off due to it's genre, i don't generally like musicals but i still enjoy watching Moulin Rouge.

Plus South Park: The Movie and Team America are both technically musicals, and they're among my all time favorites list.
