I dont fancy having to take the mother board out every time i do anything the chip, or is there bolts fixed into the motherboard

Thanks

Most of the high end coolers need to be bolted to the board for the simple reason that they are so heavy.

hi m8 , if you change your coolers often why dont you cut a section of the motherboard tray away so you can gain access to both sides of the motherboard.;):D

With most of the bolt on HSF the metal back plate is or can be stuck to the back of the mobo so that if you remove the HSF the back plate should stay in place so it would be possible to mess around without taking the mobo out, but the amount of messing around possible would depend on the cooler and how much room you have in the case around the HSF.

The backplate of the Thermalright Ultra120 series is so thick that it stays in place if you remove the cooler itself from it, as long as the board is installed on standard short spacers. It's helped by the fact that the cross-bars have raised locating rings which fit into the holes from underneath.

All LGA775 boards have the four standard spaced holes for fitting a LGA775 cooler.

I wouldn't feel okay with putting any of the larger heatsink coolers on without a backlplate, the motherboard would be strained far too much.

yeah, most coolers require the motherboard to be removed. I use a titan amanda and it's very heavy and uses a backplate. Abit anoying when i need to remove it, but the cooling is worth it.

Anyway once the cooler is in, i don't see why you have to do anything to the CPU and need to take it back out. If you constantly take out the CPU or change them often, then you would be better with a screw in one like this:-

Can easily be taken out at any time and offers good cooling.

Well I guess you would have to define 'good' but in my books yes, most good coolers need a backplate.

The backplate normally sticks to the rear of the motherboard so once its fitted and the board is back in the case you can add/remove the main heatsink as you need without having to remove the motherboard again.

In the picture below you can see the TRUE's backplate circled in red, you just peel off the square white sticker and slap it on the rear of the mobo with the four cups poking through the four holes in the motherboard. very simple indeed! :)
