Hey there

Well I was wondering, what is the better card? A HD2600XT 512MB or a HD3850 256MB? I plan on running Crysis (on the best settings possible), CoD4, Quake Wars, UT3, BD2 & 2142, Stalker and Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, Far Cry 2 etc. My system is being upgraded to an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (2.0GHz, 1MB Cache), 2GB DDR Ram and either the HD2600XT or the HD3850 for major gaming. Just wanting some opinions tbh.

Thanks for your help and time.

The reason I was looking at the HD2600XT aswell is because I'm going on holiday to Flordia this coming Saturday for 2 weeks and am planning on buying the card over there but I can't find the HD3850 512MB on any of the big stores websites over there. I can only find the H3850 256MB in Best Buy and the HD2600XT has 512MB of memory.

It will be more than adequate...your CPU is the weakest link of the bunch there. Overclocking would be advised ;)

Newegg isn't actually a shop though is it? Just an online retailer...and I'm not gonna be ordering online when I'm over there, just browsing around the big electronics and superstores such as Walmart, Best Buy and Circuit City.

tbh i'd just buy it over here for the sake of £20, what happens if it goes wrong? You could have a long wait on your hands if you have to rma it.
If you were going to get something significantly more expensive then yes the price benefits might outway the risk.
By the way the OcUk 256mb one is only £93.99

new egg is a shop based in new jersey, not just an online retailer. in fact they are the USA`s largest online pc tech retailer. I personally have had a many CPU`s sent over from them as "gifts" from a friend out there. :)

As long as you don't buy a 2600 XT you'll be fine. It won't run crysis on a mobile phone's resolution, let alone a desktop computer's.
Nice! :D

Fully agree!

I've had a 256mb HD3850pro and it was absolutely awesome. I'd say it's performance was close to a 7950GX2 and 8800GTS 320mb.

Plus they clock very well (and very quietly) using the stock cooler too. I got an extra 100mhz+ on the core and 170mhz+ on the memory. :)

The HD3850 512mb are really good an can be had cheap over here. I have 2 Gecube OCed version with 725mhz on the core and 1800mhz on the memory and together they fly, and even on there own they do themselves proud. Really try and get the extra memory for the HD3850, but don't buy the HD2600XT, not even if it has a 1024mb of ram. it's a rather lacklustre card.

Well, they may have the 512MB version instore but I don't know yet as all's that I can see it's what they are showing on the website so until I get there I won't know if the 512MB version is available. And nah, I'm not getting into ordering items while I am on holiday and getting them mail ordered, cba with all the hassle.
