R/C Drift Cars

Cracking car Lordrobs. I'm spending a fortune getting my 1/8 rallycross kit together so drifting is on hold for a bit.

If you can, cut the body posts down and use a pencil sharpener to round off the tops. Makes it easier to get the shell on.

Theres some very good tutorials online for making little intercoolers for the bodyshell.

I really want one now :(

What sort of cost are you looking at for the basic but full kit to get you started?

Cheers

Andy

if you shop around and get a kit from ebay, and then some batterys/charger, and a radio for it, probably around 120-140 at a guess...probably cheaper if you shop around enough.

and im still trying to get a picture of my beast

Tamiya is by far the best option to get started with the drifting. And the quality, although not amazing is good. In fact as bashers, Tamiya are better made to take abuse and crashes than most, because of the simplicity of their design.

Plus, you can pretty much buy a whole new Tamiya car kit cheaper than some of the spares run to on the pro makes. There are limitations with the set-ups and flexibility of gear ratios though but this isn’t a biggy.

If you want to race at a pro level then it is a whole different ball game and seriously expensive. Well in real terms its a very cheap motor racing hobby with costs scaling in proportion to the cars :D

The only thing with the drift cars is it gets very boring very quickly.

That aside, you need to get at least one of these motors (Tamiya Super Stock TZ/RZ), which absolutely brilliant for the money and work v-well in the Tamiyas, given the gear ratios. They have loads of torque and work with the standard Tamiya electronic speed controller and are supreme for drifting giving a good balance of vfm, grunt, speed and battery life. They also last a long time before needing a com-skim or the brushes replaces.

In terms of batteries, if you look on ebay/google for “vapextech” these come up well and are cheap.

Having tried and owned nitro in cars and trucks, although you get a huge amount of speed, this can limit the fun since more speed = fubar crashes = ££££ :( They can also be a pain to maintain and keep unless you have a shed / utility room etc or don’t mind the smell in the house.

this is a 100% true comment, but find a racing club near you and get involved, if they have a 27t stock class, the tt-01 does fairly well in that class, even if its a drift chassis, as the only differences on the drift compared to a race, is the gear ratio and tires and maybe the motor, slap a stock motor in, slicks on, and change the ratio...mess with the camber a little, and away you go.

Its what i do once a fortnight, heaps and heaps of fun..Plus you get to show off your drifting once the racing is done :D

Edit/ and i take it semi-seriously, im not bothered if i lose or win, its just mega fun, and thats what i like.

Didn't know you played with toy cars lordrobs. :p

Where do you go drifting? Might come out for a bash sometime with you as I've not really had my car out since I stopped racing a few years back.

Cheers. Yeah I'll be snipping those posts down tonight, thanks for the tip for using a pencil sharpener hadn't thought of that one.

I'm tempted to make a start on a fully customised Levin or Trueno at some point that will have all the bells and whistles on it including fully functioning LED's with brake lights, indicators, reverse lights etc.

Costs vary quite a bit. Probably your cheapest starter option is to go for something like an HPI D10 (they are available from modelsport.co.uk if you want a look). Ready to run with battery and all the radio gear for £100.

My one was £129 for just the kit, as I had batteries and radio I could stick in. I've dabbled in R/C for years but had never built a car from scratch so really wanted a kit and I'm glad I did as I really enjoyed 90% of the build (the other 10% was a frustrating PITA :p )

The only thing with the drift cars is it gets very boring very quickly.

This is why I'm leaving the diffs open in mine for the time being. Stick on some grippy rubber and its good to go as a touring car.

TOY CAR?! Your as bad as my gf... its not a toy :p :D

TBH I only recently got back into R/C because of an afterschool club that I run. We started working on some R/C cars that we found in a resource cupboard in the school so I got my old one up and running.

As for where I drift, well so far just my living room and spare bedroom :p The plan is to head down to the Gateway business park (same car park as our mini meet) and get sideways one evening :p If it ever stops blooming raining :(

I'll let you know if/when I head down and I'll try and get Cybershot down too but he said he's got this strange thing called 'work' that might mean he can't make it

You've either got a big house or a slow car. :p I'd have no chance trying to drive mine around indoors. looks like I'd better get mine back into a decent running condition then, will probably have to guess at setup as I used to run it indoors so will need the ride height bumping up a fair bit for starters.

Like a lot of people I got a R/C car about a year ago and after 'building' it from scratch I never had it out on the road basically cos it's ****** :D

I remember it like it was yesterday, I'd just finished bolting on the last cog, the glow plug was on charge, the remote control all charged up...it was time to start her up!!
It was about 11pm at night and raining outside, who can I hurt starting her up inside? I'm not gonna drive it anywhere, just start it up. So I did...I had it on a box so the wheels were free to move but the body wasn't, the engine roared into life and SCREEEEEAMED into action, the noise was horrific, the wheels were turning at about 100mph, the noise was deafening, the smoke from the the thing was almost choking me, I had to turn it off, but the blooming thing wouldn't, it was stuck in full out power!!!! I could see neighbours coming out of their houses, my girlfriends parents were starting to get annoyed" Not good...

I took it outside and un-hooked the accelerator cable. THANK GOD!

Once I had finished it the buggy did start again :( . When I try starting the motor the wheels actually try turning around which can't be good and the car never actually powers up!

So it's been sat in my loft.

It's time to rebuild I think..Otley Modelsport here I come :D

Yeah it was only to test it out really, couldn't manage anything more than a couple of low speed semi-drifts and donuts :(

As far as I can tell pace wise its OK but not fast. Its got a Tamiya "Sport Tuned" motor which IIRC is 23 turn. Not much top end pace but plenty of torque to break traction :)

You've just tempted me toO!

damnit, there goes the rest of this months wages :D ....

I'm a total nub when it comes to this, I would like a kit. They fairly easy to build?

Are those web links good? like where you get all your stuff from?

Ben.

If you take your time then yeah the kits are pretty easy. Put it this way, if I can do it anyone can :D Not sure how long mine took me as I tend to lose track of time when I get stuck into something. Chassis maybe 8 to 10 hours and the body another 4 or so including painting. Thats very rough timescales though. Basically most of Friday night, late afternoon and most of the evening saturday and a few hours on Sunday to finish up. I really took my time though as A) I enjoyed the build and B) I didn't want to mess up :p

From a cost point of view a RTR car might work out cheaper rather than buying a kit + charger + battery + radio gear, depends if you want to actually build it yourself though.

I bought my kit from a local model shop which cost me a bit more money. Reason being that I was split between a couple of different models and wanted to physically see them to choose between the two. The guys were pretty helpful so I'd have felt a bit rude to then go off and buy it online. Plus it meant I could have it right away!

I have bought online before and can highly recommend www.modelsport.co.uk from personal experience.

Same as mine, just a different shell

Yep, thought so, actually searched for your model number, and figured as you liked yours, it'd be a well priced piece of kit, and i'm a sucker for a Supra :)

*seems empty bank account*

*sees £200 sitting in paypal*

*sees temptation*

Yeah I VERY nearly bought the Supra. If you have no intention of putting in LEDs, which at the end of the day are just a novelty and add weight, then it would be my choice. The silver they use in the photo's isn't the most flattering of colours on that shell. I've seen metallic red and metallic purple (same colour as mine) used on that shell and it looks loads better :)

Yeah, I can imagine, although in that sense, i'm not sure how long the first shell would retain its youthful sparkling looks! :D

Definitely a future consideration, or something to buy to celebrate getting out of self employment when I (Hopefully) get one of the 8 jobs i've applied for! hehe :D
