I purchased £6000 of Northern Rock shares on Friday..

Lets break it down losers.

The argument - Is doing what the OP has done gambling? Simple! Also everyone calm down, this is an internet forum!

Oh and I say yes it is.

What an utterly retarded statement. I can comment on a piece of music. I can understand how it is composed, how it is produced and how it is distributed.

"CAN YOU PLAY A PIANO?!"

"No"

"STFU!!"

Where did I say STFU? By all means, feel free to post your uninformed tripe.

He never said he could give the share price, Just that certain factors influence them- an 'educated' guess

Unless you have inside knowledge (which is illegal), nothing that you know is truly educated as you are still as much likely to be wrong as to be right.

Congrats

But to me, that's just gambling.

Unless you have some sort of strategy that has been back tested, and could be run over and over again in the future, then you could have lost the £3,000 just as easy as you won it

erm.. there's plenty you can know. "I know apple just announced a new product", "I know company x is probably going to be taken over by company y". It doesn't have to be insider trading to be useful knowledge. There is a possibility you will be wrong but you're not "as much likely to be wrong as you are right"

I also don't trade on the stock market, but I work for a company that develops a stock market trading platform. Does that make my opinion worthless?

This might surprise some of you but in the Juvenile Prison I worked at, a big part of Business IT was dealing in stocks & shares.
The Trainees have to write a spreadsheet, choose 20 companies and every day input the data from the Financial Times.
They are given an imaginary £1000 to spend and quite a few of the lads were well over £50,000 profit after a couple of months.
Not bad for chavs.

He seems to be of an opinion that because he bet's on the dogs twice a week he can comprehend the interworking of the global markets system, and tell us that we are wrong and he is right.

Will Gill needs pointing tbh. :p

I don't think you have to wait. Not sure how you go about it but I have owned 100 shares for as long as I can remember and get about £5-£10 dividends every quarter..
