Does anyone agree with me on this?

There was a time that kids where kids but it seems nowadays that parents just force their kids to grow up, maybe before they should. When I hear of 8 and 9 year olds playing FPS games and watching 15 rated films etc, I can’t help wondering why

I guess I’m guilty of this too. My sons only 12 but I treat him the same age as his sister, who’s 14 nearly. I know it’s only a year or so but it terms of a child, that’s a big gap yet I treat him much older and guess I always have.

I maybe sounding like an oldie fuddy dud, but when I look back at my childhood, which was fun, I was never in. I seriously think the kids are missing out big time.

What’s you view?

When I was a kid, me and my mates used to go out and play army. Kids can't do that these days because they'll get nicked for running around with toy guns. Not to mention the lawsuits that'll be filed when one gets accidentally hit by a "half-ender" hand-grenade!

Kids can't do anything these days without someone sticking their noses in and banning it. Be it the police, Health & Safety, local government or whoever.

what do you define has a childhood? Maybe its just a different childhood to what you are used to but its still classed as a child. Who came up with what a childhood is ... I Belize its more of an experience... It all different for children

My view is that its the same as it always was.

Decent parents kids are not missing out on childhood.

Moronic chav-style parents kids are sitting at home at 9 playing GTA and watching 18 rated films.

Not really, the same things are there when i was a kid. fields, parks, swings, dens ect. What they choose to do as they cant be bothered doing anything that might mean effort is to stand on corners or stop in to play a game.

I dont think its a good thing that the kids around our way know the legal rights more than adults, but thats the way things go when they are mothered to much. IMO

They do the things that 15 yearolds do at 8 and 9 because parents dont stop them, they push limits too see what they can get away with and around the estate i live in, some of them have gone to far.My kids, i dare get into trouble too, but never with police and never heard the neighbours complain abotu them yet. They go out and play football, cricket in the summer and recently in the dark wet weather go go-karting where the place doing it offers £2 a night race. But again, some kids just want to stand in the rain, dark and wind to prove how hard they are lol..

I love kids honest... just some need a little more disapline then they are getting, imo.

ColiN - childhood is as good as you make it.

I agree. I'd far rather be a kid when I was a kid then be a kid in this day an age. Heck I didn't even start watching TV till I was a teenager, a) because we only had a few channels (in France) and b) I had more fun doing other things, and our tv was tiiiiiny.

Would be interesting to see some statistics on how many 10-15 year old are out and about playing in parks, going on bike rides playing on the streets etc in present years compaired to how many did 10 years ago.

My bet is that at least 50% more children stay in and watch tv/play on computer now a days

In all honesty though, my childhood experiences stem from the 70's, so they are a little different to these days. We had cool stuff like space-hoppers and Chopper bikes.:)

Becuase 10 years ago I never played on a computer

I did, but not all the time. Playing in aspestos tubing and at the quarry was far more fun

edit - I know what you mean. Depends on how old you are now

When I look at my christmas list from about 6M years ago, it's pretty different to todays and mine looks pretty basic in comparison. Not much of todays child gets anything that really inspires imagination.

I disagree, playing games on a pc / watchign tv is far nicer than to waste your time running around causing trouble. Been playing on my pc since the age of 3, and no regrets to it yet tbh.

15 Year olds playign in parks?
HAHAHAHAHA !
No other word for it.
You're an embarrasement if you play in the woods @ 15...

@ 15 there're 2 groups:
People who sit at home gaming/ watching tv. Occasionally playing footy and onyl going out on occasions.
Peopel who are going out all the time & chilling outside & explore sexual stuff & experiment with smoking/ getting drunk.

And some are in between & a combo or 2, no 15 year old plays on the street though, thats for kids upto 10 ish.

I don't feel i've missed out on my childhood. My childhood was basically built on the PS1 and then PC's. I never saw the fun in running around the streets screaming. I did play football everyday at school etc though so I don't see the problem.

Sorry, i didnt mean playing in parks at 15.

I think you are missing a big chunk of social life if you stay in and watch tv all the time instead of going out.

True.
Sitting @ home & watching tv/gaming is enjoyable nonetheless, and hes less risks generally than on the street where anything can happen.
