Is a Nikon D40 OK for a beginner?

I have had my D40 for 4/5 months now and have to say I love it to bits. I upgraded from a Fuji S5600 bridge camera, and am finding the learning experience so enjoyable. I feel I do have loads of things I need to learn and this camera will definately serve me well so wholly recommend it! Personally, I was in a similar dilemma but thought it more important to have some flex in being able to buy additional lens' rather than have a fancy body. First lens I have bought has been a Sigma 70-300 APO DG, which I picked up for £70 new (may not be the greatest, but am very happy with it and it allows me to zoom and do macro stuff). I am now wishing to get a 10-20 Sigma for some real wide angle stuff. So remember to save some cash for some lenses and accessories (tripod).

In case you are wondering, my many experimental photos can be found on my flickr site www.flickr.com/photos/martinturner - may give you an idea of how quickly you can get to grips with it. Main thing I have noticed is the clarity of the image over the bridge camera.

Have just bought an R72 IR filter so will be playing with that next. Be nice if there are any pals on here who would like to add me as a contact.

I held the D40 and the D40x and i love them, but im going for the 400D as i think its a better choice in the long run expense wise.

Its a ncie camera dude, if you havnt already, take the advice given to me and go check one out!

No sure if he is respected or not but Ken Rockwell seems to think the D40 is the dogs. Me being a noob to slr has found it to be excellent especially in terms of cost as once you get the camera & lens you will also find yourself buying tripod, filter, bag, flash & books so it soon adds up.

Ken Rockwell is possibly the only person in history to successfully make love to a Nikon SLR.

He's just a touch biased.
