first 3870x2 review!!

Hmm normally these dont pop up till launch day, wonder if its been knocked forward a day.

It's just sort of a placeholder at the moment. No price or other information. If it's 'official' that the card is coming on the 23rd, maybe acknowledging their existence isn't a breaking the NDA. I dunno enough about it though.

Am pretty happy with those results tbh, even with AA and AF enabled it is still pretty good.

Only a day to go, shame i dont get paid till next thursday, damn it.

As long as he/they doesn't/don't mention the price, benchmarks, or a picture then I think they are alright. As mentioned above, it's just a placeholder. Couldn't find a sapphire, OCuk or Powercolour one though. Perhaps later...

for those that are concerned about the GDDR3, I think it was an ok move by ATI to reduce the production cost and hopefully those savings will carry on to the consumer. If those Samsung chips are the same as on the 3850, then they clock to 1100(2200mhz)...which gives it plenty of memory bandwidth in addition to tighter timings in comparison to GDDR4.

Also I have heard that some people with the HIS IceQ3 3850 are getting 1175 on their Samsung chips....which is pretty darn impressive for gDDR3.

Im really hoping those benchmarks tally with the other sites, all well and good the card performing well in one review from some obscure asian site, has to do it in more.

On the memory front, its possible that one of the board partners might bring out a gddr4 version.

Didn't a similar thing happen with the x1900XT-X and the x1950XT-X? One had GDDR3 and the other had GDDR4, and the tighter timings of the GDDR3 meant it was as fast (or hardly any difference) for much less money :)

ddr4 versions were actually slightly slower, had something to do with the ringbus controller.

So basically it's an overclocked 3850x2 ;) (not that I'm complaining).

But seriously speaking.. if this card is actually ok, then i'll hold off getting an X38 board, and Just buy a P35 to save money. Only reason I was getting the X38 was for another 3870.

My main interest though is to see how it overclocks. Can you clock the memory and clocks properly using the ati software? I also want to know how fast people are gonna try and volt mod it :D Lastly, as nice and siple as the cooling solution is, there is bound to be an aftermarket cooler for it, especially after that 3 fan maahoosive 2900xt cooler recently!

I would hang out for a bit for some PCI-E 1.1 vs 2.0 testing

Just noticed an error in the review, in the graph showing all games nfs for some reason is listed 100/100, when its actually the game the x2 did the worst in.

Yeah, I think that's an obvious error with the NFS. Noticed that straight away. Anyway, its only naff review, so don't take it as read that it is how performance will be. Also, they are using 2Gb not 4Gb, so that may make some difference to this crossfire setup.

It wasn't held back at all, the release has always been q1 08.

Gibbo has had one for a couple of weeks now I think. That presumably means all the review sites have had one for at least this long. While it doesn't mean they've been held back, it suggests that they could have been introduced into retail earlier than they have been, as long as the drivers were polished enough.
