I suspect it's possible, but you would have to go on the policy as a named driver (you have to be able to take over if need be, and to do that legally you need to be insured).

I wouldn't like to see the cost though :)

I'm not sure about the position with regards to the learner having an accident whilst under your tuition, I suspect it shouldn't affect your policy but i'm not sure as i'm fairly sure there are circumstances were the instructor is also held liable.

When i was learning I had my own insurance policy on my own car registered in my name...
I added my mother as a named driver for the reason Werewolf explained, the annoying thing is, ive now got 1 years NCB, but ive only held my full license for 7days... When i try and get an online insureance quote they wont recognise my NCB, as they say i cannot have a NCB longer than the time ive held a Full License :(

It is entirely possible. When learning to drive my first car it was fully insured under my own name.

The person 'supervising' does not need to be insured on the vehicle*. The learner can insure it themselves - I did when I was 17.

* Unless the learner panics and you have to take over

Insurance is actually cheaper when you have a provisional license, when you tell them youve passed it goes up a fair bit.

Does the mum have a provisional license, though? you cant be insured if you dont, surely?

Got a link for that?

How about http://www.helpingldrivers.com/questions/index.htm.

I had one from the DSA but have now lost it - anyway, the 'supervisor' DOES have to be insured.

I don't have a link, it's based on what my driving instructor and my insurance company told me 5 years ago. Obviously if the supervisor is to drive at all they must be insured but otherwise common sense suggests they don't need to be insured as nobody would ever have caused to claim against them, only against the learner.

Quinn Direct will do this. The cost for adding the 17 year old will be horrendous though.

They're MUCH better to both take professional driving lessons and then, once the mother/both are fully qualified then they will get much cheaper car insurance.

I've always been told the supervisor must be insured - they have to be able to take over if need be, and they cannot do that legally if they are not insured for the vehicle.

I wonder if the law has changed a bit?

aye, if you've got third party cover on your own insurance for other cars it should cover you, it's just that not every policy offers it:)

Indeed. In fact, the supervisor might not even own a car.

It is important to note that as you turn 21 and have been driving for over 3 years, you cant just jump in the car with any learner you fancy.

Am mainly talking to myself :D
