Tagan 580w Just went out with a bang

Just been playing Crysis when my tagan 580w decided to pop, bang and smoke. I pulled the power cable out as soon as it happened. I've swapped in another PSU and luckily everything else is working fine. If this was the first tagan that popped it on me, I'd go and RMA it for a replacement, but I don't want to bother with tagan anymore, this is the second one that's broken on me, luckily this time it was only the PSU that b0rked it. I'm sure I'm well entitled to a refund if it's within the 1 year reseller period right? Looks like i'm going to have buy a replacement this week and just hope i can get a refund. Anyone else had any problems/similar experiences with tagan PSUs? What PSU should i go for this time?

My specs are:

Q6600 (overclocked to 3.6ghz, but is stable at 4ghz)
ATi 2900XT
4GB RAM
4 HD drives
1 DVD drive
Compro E700
Auzentech Soundcard

You may be limited to replacement only if you've had it a while. But if so, just get it replaced then sell it on if you are wanting to move away from Tagan.
 
It's not from OcUK but do you think i'd be able to get a replacement of a different PSU?
 
I assume most places have a similar RMA policy, you will be entitled to a replacement of the same product only. Or the closest thing to it if its an end of line item. You're not normally allowed to exchange or upgrade for another brand/model.
 
Ahh, well it looks like I'll have to get a replacement and sell it on. In the mean time, does anyone have any recommendations on a new PSU for the spec i posted earlier? :)
 
The sign of a good PSU isn't that it doesn't break, it's that it doesn't take your whole rig with it when it goes.

That said, 8 months is a short time and I would probably get a seasonic 600W PSU in your position.
 
Go in and demand your money back, not a replacement. Tell them the product has not performed to your expectations and that this is the second item of this make which has died on you. A replacement is just not acceptable.

They'll probably just give you a credit note to make you go away in which case both parties are happy, you can choose a different make and the shop still has your money.

My view of technology is if it breaks in the first six months I get my money back. Your's is eight months now but if you argue enough/demand to see someone in charge you might succeed.

Rubbish, they've had a few bad batches with ticking fans, but aside that, before the Corsairs came along about 6months to a year ago to take thier place, Tagan were often recommended as the best budget performers. They were also one of the first to market with decent, affordable modular PSUs.

A couple of years back they were one of the most recommended PSUs on this very forum.

Recommended yes but that was before the ticking batch and better PSU's have come out since then.
 
My Tagan 480W is still running strong after 3 years. I've had 3 different CPUs, between intels and amds, and different graphics cards and has never given a problem. It is also silent (I can't hear it at least).

I've heard of COrsair going too as well (and taking a whole rig too) as the other makes also mentioned here. Products fail from time to time.
 
To me, though i have never owned one, Tagan seem like quite a hardy, well built make. This is just from reviews etc, and although it looks to have failed on this occasion, luckily it hasn't taken anything with it.
 
I'm gonna contact the place I bought it from and see where I get with that. This is the second tagan PSU i've had blow on me, the first one killed my graphics card too, it was a ticking 480watt one. I am really happy that it was just the PSU that went though, i thought my whole PC was dead at first :P. Heavy overclocking wouldn't be a cause for it to blow would it? Don't they usually just cut out and shut the PC off?

thats because channelwell built the first 580w psu's for them and they WERE great psu's. then they changed supplier and they started going bang....


also, the corsairs have been around for at least 16 months now. ive had mine for a year now.

My 530W U15 has been with me for over a year now and most of the time it's on 24/7. Rock solid don't have any problem with it. it's very well built and the cables they provide are of very high quality as well. Also I heard their RMA service is good.
 
Just got off the phone with nanopoint (distro) and they have said that they will replace my 580w with a better model, so I suppose that's better than a straight replacement, I've just got to apply for an RMA now.

My bad then, guess corsair have been in the PSU market a little longer than I'd realised :)
