i posted in sept 07 about trying to get a new job in IT which i've been failing at with a passion. In 5 months id have been in retail for 10years . the past few weeks have been totally poor , staff are leaving, people are moving , lack of staff, moral is really bad (there isnt any) and last week i appled for a diffrent job role (and got turned down) \o/ as 1 person had 1 more skill than i did.

Today we had 3 people on our department (fresh foods) 4 at 1:30pm
i've just been thinking why?! i cant seem to get a job in IT at all , im religious with getting the Argus on thursdays / and the friday add(on friday) i look at gov websites etc. & have appled for a few and still get turned down.

i've been trying to think what have i gained with 10 years at a supermarket? & also now i feel that my quallifications are worthless (last quallification)

City & Guilds - Level 3 Advanced Diploma for IT Practitioners (ICT Systems Support)

Since ive finished college ive not really been in contact with IT apart from at home when playing games / on this forum ... thats as far as it goes.

im just lost i feel. i have no idea what direction to take , also i dont feel im getting a chance to prove what i can hopefully do.

my moan over

thanks for the read

I used to use jobserve.com and jobsite.co.uk to get in contact with the agencies for IT jobs. I found them to be quite good.

Make sure your CV is up to scratch, and that you have a good email template to contact different agencies about jobs they have on offer. If you send an email + CV and don't get a reply after about 4 or 5 hours (assuming you sent the emails in the AM!), just give them a call to see what's what.

Good luck with the search! :)

get your cv decent along with a good covering letter and then just spam jobs. even ones you don think you will like. you have to start somewhere.

experience is king when it comes to IT

Set-up your own pc repair business would be my advice. Why beg someone else for a job when you can create your own? :) Go self-employed, starting with something small in your free time.

Other than that, if I had a decent amount of savings I would go travelling for 6 months and work something else out when I got back.

I work at Sainsbury's too... I feel your pain. It's not putting my skills to any use whatsoever. (I've got BBC at A-levels in Computing,Business,Physics)

I am 25 and can only just support myself at this job, people who I work with who are my age (and younger) are getting married and having babies. Who knows how they can afford it on this money.

im 25 myself also , the gf hit a huge (i want a baby) to me last week so thats kinda thrown me back, i'm just in a crappy mood as always :D (not about the whole baby thing)

It's just getting your foot in the door mate. I'm on msn if you need a chat.

im on msn atm

easyer said than done ,

also ive been looking at 1st line support and well (im getting 10k per year now) i know its a step in IT even at 10k ... but that wouldnt support a family :/

Have you considered moving up in Supermarket retail and actually making a career out of it?

If you work hard and are relatively competent then you can earn quite a bit more than in most basic IT jobs these days. And it is one of the few career paths in which you can quite literally fly up the ladder.

Few people realise the earning potential in retail these days. It's a goldmine if you're good at what you do.

I have thought about it , but there isnt much oppertunity at the store i work at, & with managment moving people about atm , its hard to get anywhere. The staff doesnt get any prase at all, no thanks etc.

Can you not ask your gf to put off having a family for a few years?
shes 27 this year (been with her 3 years)

Anyways back to topic ..lol

I have a C.V alreadybut where is the best place to get one done (pay for a service)

Fair enough, if its not for you then its not for you. It certainly isn't an "easy" career path to take. Though I would say that in my opinion pretty much any job has opportunity. It's just down to personal drive, commitment and tenacity. You say that "it's hard to get anywhere" well in all honesty thats true of any job. You don't get promoted by sitting back and going through the motions day to day. You move on by giving 100%, showing that you're a cut above the rest and pushing yourself to achieve what other people consider "hard to do".

I went from earning £15k at Debenhams to earning £35k at Tesco's. Not bad considering I have only been in full time work for 1 year. I am now on the Store management development scheme which should give me my first placement this year on a basic salary of £65k plus company car and bonuses etc.

At Debenhams there were times I felt that there were no opportunities, it was dead end etc. I just bucked myself up and worked my hardest to get noticed and made my own damned opportunities. My point is whatever you are doing, you have the ability to move up. You just have to realise that the poorly paid work you are doing now shouldn't be viewed as a hinderance, but more of a launch pad.

Winners make it happen, losers let it happen.
