Going to suggest a re-install of Windows XP MCE for a college with ad-ware and trojans infestation. It's an old eMachines PC with the installation image on partition D:

Instead of using Windows Update to get post SP2 files, if there any reason not to use SP3 release candidate?

I assume if there is any change come final release version of SP3, the alterations will be picked up by Windows Update. And will it be list Serive Pack 3 or Service Pack 3 Release Candidate on system properties?

Thanks.

I think you assume wrong. As far as I know once you've installed an RC of a service pack you get the text on your desktop telling you that, and you have to uninstall it and install the final upon release to start getting updates again.

Incase anyone searches for this, I've tried in on my computer.

System properties lists:
Service Pack 3, v.3264

SP3 RC broke my RivaTuner fan profiles and speed controls, and no longer reconed I had any AV installed.

Just use SP2 and wait for the official SP3.
