Most of London could be subject to a 20mph speed limit under new plans.

The AA said a blanket 20mph speed limit was wrong.

Paul Watters, head of roads and transportation policy, said 20mph zones had "huge" benefits - but only when applied judiciously.

He said: "If this becomes the default limit across the board it will reduce capacity on London's roads.

What do you think?

On a serious note, I think it's rubbish. It won't make any difference at all. Not that anyone will stick to them, it's just not practicable driving at those speeds. It won't help congestion (how can it?!). I still believe that most speed limits should be variable, i.e. 20-30mph during busy periods, and 40 at night or in areas where it's open (like Park Lane (A41) in London).

I knew exactly what he meant, the traffic in London can now occasionally break the speed limit. Which is the only reason I can see why they want to have a 20mph limit.

I just hope it doesn't cost us more money with putting up a speed camera infrastructure. They don't have a SPECS system up in London yet except for some tunnels and certain routes... I doubt people would ever get caught out with the way london is anyway. The time people will be done will be in the evening.

Can't see it making any difference at all in central London to be honest and putting it in place in the 'burbs probably wouldn't make any difference during the day either.

Park Lane is a 40 limit but maybe that's what you were getting at.

The proposed 20 limit will drive me insane if judiciously applied and enforced. I often drive round North London in the evenings when traffic does flow at 30 (+5).

There is one 20 limit I know of near a school (well stretching 1 mile each side of the school) and it is so tedious keeping to the limit when the school is closed or there are no children around. Having to drive 10 miles at 20mph doesn't bear thinking about.

what do they expect us to do? walk to work?

the trains are full up
the buses are full up
the roads are full up.

prices of transport is going up, and driving at 20mph to get to work? Im utterly lost on where the hell we are heading. nothing seems to follow common sense anymore...
