Hi,

If I was to make the above jump in alloys, will the ride comfort be severely compromised? I have a feeling a stone on the road will feel like a rock and a speed bump will be spine busting. Handling will be better though surely?

Thanks :)

Ride will likely suffer, car will be more prone to tramlining. Handling will deteriorate but ultimate mechanical dry grip is likely to increase slightly.

I wouldn't, personally :)

Depends on the car. If its something like a Merc S Class you might get away with it, but it will adversely affect ride quality. If its something like a Focus, it will look very silly, ruin the handling, and make the ride absolutely awful.

Also, remember that a set of decent, non crap tyres in proper 19" sizes will run to about £600.

Grip would be better - that's what I meant. :D £600 is steep and the ride issue is concerning. Think I'll pass and spend the money on some xenons. :)

I personally wouldn't go above 2" over your standard alloys when upgrading, Besides, 17s might look just as good ;)

I started to think about what kind of 19" rims you would get for the same money as some xenon lights but I developed a twitch in my right eye and sicked up in my mouth a bit.

I'll try not to think of it again...

I'm lucky, I drive my dad's IS250 while I'm saving up for a second hand IS200. He only needs it on Monday when he's off from work. I've been tempted by this vid...

That doesnt really answer my question. Why would you fit 19 inch alloys to your Dads car?
Because the current ones look tiny in comparison to the size of the car and I use it the most. It's not mine but if he allows it and it inproves the look of the car, why not?

But...if you're saving for a car...why waste a massive amount of money (massive, as it could be saved, with a better reason) on giving your dad's car bigger wheels?

If I was in your situation i'd happily drive my dad's car as stock, cause thats what it is, his car, and save the money for a car of my own, sod it, buy some flea bitten 13's and sell his 16's! increase your saving!

Becuase it costs money? I drive my Dads car a lot and I've never once thought of replacing his nasty 16 inch wheels :p

I have thought about the fact that it is my dad's car but it doesn't matter anyway. The compromise in ride won't please him as he values comfort. :)

What does he drive? And how much did you pay for your 5 series? Plate and mileage when you bought it?

He has a 530d, my 530i was advertised for £8k but I haggled :) It's a Dec 01 on a 51 plate. Mileage? Wrong side of 100k :p
