Teen takes on donor's immune system

thats pretty cool hopefully doctors can work it all out and harness it for other people . i mean aids destroys the immune system but if you could replace it maybe it'll lead to a cure.

psychologically would you feel like the same person if you no longer had your familys blood in you? Also isnt the blood responsible for holding the dna template of the person? Does this mean the new blood has the old template or the donors dna? Wll changes start to happen?

We'll probably be seeing more instances of this kind of thing within the next couple of years too! Humans are still evolving, perhaps this kind of things is the next step in our evolution?

ummm mrk, somehow I dont think evolution takes into consideration the swapping of bodily organs with other people.

but something has to have happened for a hosts blood type to change to the donors type after receiving an organ when previously this was never though possible...?

Organ replacements like this are done every day all over the world and how many times has something like this occurred?

A reletive of mine had a liver transplant a few years back and all of his life he drank black tea, after the transplant he couldnt stomach it and it had to be made with milk.

Ive heard other stories like this when the transplantee takes on some of the likes of the doner.

There was a very good program on C4 a year or so ago which focused on the possibility of heart transplant recipients taking on personality traits (and sometimes memories!) of the donor. The possibility that 'mind' extends beyond the brain is fascinating.

for a bone marrow transplant i think they need to basicly kill the host (kill white blood cells etc) , then replace with the new stuff, which may still be rejected and they will need drugs all there life to stay alive. I could be wrong though.

I don't think that's right. There would be no point in having a bone marrow transplant if you had to take immunosuppressants for it to work. That's why they search for a compatible donor.

what people fail to realise is that this was all my idea. she wasn't going to let the host immune system take over, and I was all like "if you don't, it'll be a lifetime of anti-rejection drugs for you", then she was all like "I didn't think of it like that...thanks", then I had some pizza

Thats pretty incredible. I had a Liver Transplant when I was 16 and suffered heavy rejection not long after which luckily the doctors was able to control. It would be handy to not have to take immunosuppressant drugs for the rest of my life, although it's not something I complain about. I hope they can find out what was happening and learn from this to make further advancements. Too many people die waiting for donor organs.
