Hey, I'm building a new build in about 2 weeks :D. I was wondering which Card to get looking at the specs of each the GT seems to run faster than the GTS (on this board). Seeing as i don't know much about the chips myself i was wondering which one would be better. for playing 1024x1280 (possibly two monitors. A game on one and for example i.e on the other) or perhaps two games.

Thanks ethan

Well at that res i would say go for a GT, however to buy the GT you've linked would be madness. Buy a non-overclocked one, basically the cheapest you can get then spend 5 mins of your time overclocking it yourself, will save you £60.

The 512Mb GTS is about 10% faster than a 512Mb GT, avoid the old 320 and 640Mb GTS cards. The new GTS and GT are essentially the same card but the GT has 16 stream processors disabled. Both will overclock by a similar amount and it is not worth paying a premium for pre-overclocked card, just do it yourself.

I couldn't overclock to save my life. Not a clue where to start tbh. I also want to keep warranty intact due to my last card breaking.

The GPU on the GTS is faster though. Saying that an overclocked GT will be similar speed to a standard GTS.

Looking at OcUK stock, Asus 8800GT is the best buy at £165.

Hello Ethan62, I wouldn't go for either of them cards that you have linked too. In my opinion, the Nvidia 8800GTS is not needed for the resolution that you are going to be gamming at and an Nvidia 8800GT will be absolutely fine. However, I certainly wouldn't pay £220 for an Nvidia 8800GT, a complete waste of money in my opinion.

Have a look at this card here. Fantastic for the price. :)

Id get the GT for that res, as at 1280x1024 there is only gona be a couple of frames in it, its only at higher resolutions where the gap widens and the GTS pulls away. :)

That EVGA GT you linked to is overclocked to 700mhz/2000mhz so will be faster at 1280x1024 than that GTS you linked to, as thats non overclocked, its a standard clocked GTS that.

The resolution that i said is the one i am going to use at first later on (when i have some more money) i hope to buy a new lcd or two and display at higher res. But i want a card that i can play new games at high end graphics and that will last a while. perhaps is it worth waiting for a new card or shall i go for a cheaper one that can be a temp thing?

I got the 8800GTS just because i needed more than 3 years warranty. So for £182 you can get a BFG or EVGA 8800GT with 10 or more years of warranty. When for £200 you can get the same warranty for a faster card with better cooling and will overclock more for £18 more.

But if you are happy with 2 years warranty then get http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-015-PV&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008

Saves about £45 which is like another 2Gb of ram :p That is how i would decide. :)

I went from the 8800GT inno3d o/c (650 / 1900) to the gainward GTS and there really isnt much between the 2 apart from the stock cooling were the GTS was silent & the GT sounded like a jet engine :P
Even 3dmark06 difference between the 2 was less than 500 :o

Why do you say to keep away from the 620mb cards?

The 320 and 640 GTS don't actually have the same architecture as the 512mb model. The former were released around a year ago and the latter was released only a couple of months ago, so basically despite the lower ram amount, the rest of the card is newer and faster on the 512 model

Imo at the resolution you want to play games I'd get the new GT 512Mb (G92) and save some money ~£50. The GTS is faster, if you have the money then there is no reason not go get the faster card but for the performance increase at that resolution I don't think it's good value for money.
