Subaru launches first diesel engine

Due to the rising cost of fuel/road tax, I guess people want diesel and here it is.

People don't want diesel, they just have to due to this stupid government and it's global warning rubbish. It's like Hd-DVD and Blueray, and the government taxing Hd-DVD for giving off harmful gases/rays and then everyone has to buy a blueray player because it's cheaper (due to the lack of tax).

People aren't killing petrol nor the engines, the government(s) is subtly killing it off.

If Petrol and Diesel were both the same price with same running costs.. who would want a diesel car over a petrol?

Read the review of this in the new AutoCar released yesterday - they really liked it. Said it was one of the best diesel engines available today

It is still in a boxer configuration making it small and light

I don't think those figures are bad at all for a 2 ltr derv. The Legacy is a heavy car and 147bhp, 0-60 in 8.5 sec and near 50mpg is pretty good

Subaru have been loosing lots of sales before this - it just makes sense. At least it's true to their philosophy being a boxer engine

And what if the moon was made of cheese! We could fly up there and eat it...

Diesel fuel is already more expensive than petrol but people are still buying the cars.

The two are different technologies so saying if they were the same and worked the same and ran the same is a bit pointless :P because theyre not the same and never will be.

I like diesel cars and all the cars Ive owned have been diesel. If I was rich and bought cars for fun then Id have some diesel cars and some big petrol supercars etc... but Im not rich :P so I choose diesel :) not because its particularly cheaper or better... just because I like it

Interesting read, I myself am the total opposite! However, I have spent some time driving a Honda Civic (04) 1.9 Diesel and I loved the Torque that the engine produced at low revs. :)

NONONONONO! You can't say that here, Fox might hear you!

Diesel all the way for me too (even though i'm stuck with a petrol engine right now :()

Personally I think people that think modern diesels have low down torque must be deluded.

There' is no low down torque - you press the gas (or should I say oil) pedal and wait and wait and wait. It's terrible.

Jump in a car like a 330 or a 530i and press the pedal at 1,000rpm and off you go - no arsing around - just proper low down grunt followed by mid range followed by top end. Who is your god now?

Some Diesels are average, some are absolutely sublime, but most are actually a bit crap.

Never tried this in a petrol car, but can you get into 5th/6th gear without using the accelerator? ie: just let the engine idle and pull away like that.. the change gear and repeat till youre in 5th/6th? :E

That needs a bit of torque at least ;)

Admittedly, this is something you won't actually need to do that often ;)

And jump in a 530d at 1000rpm and lag lag lag lag zzz wayhay turbo torque wooooooooohoo this is grea.. rev limiter.

"Fox in diesel approval shocker."

I'm not some diesel hater, I'm just not a diesel fanboy. You all know how much I like the 530d, for example. It's just a shame that despite being one of the best diesel engines ever, it shares a range with one of the best petrol engines ever as well ;)

Yep both equally good, both far from slow, a 3 litre diesel is my next car either BMW or Audi havn't decided, was gonna be B7 A4, but do like the newer shaper 5 series, very nice looking, but Audi has Quatrro tricky choice.

Diesels aint bad, I thought they were all slow untill my dad got a Diesel volvo, 2.5L TDi 0-60 dunno but it was quite good and it could get to 140-145mph then I realised how good they were, now we have a petrol and it just eats the stuff and its only a 2.4L

I'd take a 535d over a 530i. I'd take a 320d over a 320i.

Thats because for a BMW driver its almost always about the ride comfort, and the more fuel you can get from that the better.

Unlike the usual evo scooby etc type who want a petrol for the speed.

No, it's becuase the diesel variants I mentioned are faster. I don't care about fuel economy, but the 320i isnt very fast.
