I just installed a new game.... COD4

When I'm playing it my pc seems to get VERY hot.

I've never seen a graphics card go this hot, also my pc stacked a couple of times :(

Is there anything I can do?

Graphics card is an ATI X1950XTX.

I've also just realised my PC is INSANELY LOUD!!!! I had to repair a dell pc last night and on switching it on I thought nothing happened! it was SO quiet compared to mine! lol

Whats the best way for me to cool my gfx card as cheaply as possible, also how much would it cost me to silence the lot!

Cheers,

G

The Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 is great if you've got room for it.

Assuming you've had the card for a while it may, at this point, be a bit dirty. Remove the cvard and inspect for dust or anything else that could be obstructing the cooler's operation.

The card is brand new

In that case I'd guess that the cooler's not making good contact with the core. The Accelero is cheap and would solve the problem for good. It's worth considering. :)

So that S1 thing has no fan but will keep my card cooler under strain than one with a fan?

(Yes I am a cooling noob)

You could test it that way, then lash a low-speed 120mm fan to it and compare results. If it's cool enough under passive cooling that you win on both accounts.

Do you have some air flow through the case? That does seem hot if you have some air flow, but probably about right if it is just sat there getting hotter whilst playing.

there are like 8 fans in my case LOL
It's not the number of fans that is important but the airflow and how tidy the wiring is. If the airflow through the case is restricted by wiring then your card could well reach these temps but they do seem very high.
I would also recommend the Accellero but for it to cool passively it needs good case cooling.

Dunno it just says V770 on the front.

Mines the same as that but without the blue bits on either side of the front. But I've ripped out the front USB stuff to get more air in there.

I've just spend over an hour reorganizing all the wires in my case, moving hdd's around and generally tidying it up immensely.

Gonna see if that helps.

The standard cooler on my HIS Radeon x1950xt was pretty useless. It used to overheat, even with the core underclocked! Replaced it with a Zalman VF1000 and the difference is amazing and a lot quiter too - idle at 40C (down from 58C) and load at 61C (down from 75-80) - and this is now with a higher overclock and the fan at the lowest setting too! Ambient temp in my case is around 40C.

I'd say the best thing to do is replace the stock cooler. It made a massive difference on mine.

In answer to your question. Yes, that is extremely hot for any piece of hardware, particularly when new. Refund is where I'd go.

No wonder it's loud with 8 fans in that thing... I think a new case and cooler is the way to go.

The Accelero S1 is a brilliant cooler, I have one on my 8800GT and it is currently idling at 32c (using a 120mm fan running at about 700rpm).

Case wise it really depends on what you have to spend but don't get pulled in by this 30cm fan rubbish as in most cases they just ruin the airflow and make everything really dusty. You should look for one with a 120mm intake and 120mm exhaust, something like:

Under £30

Gigabyte X1
Akasa Zen
Jeantech Phong
A+ CS-188A
Loads more generic cases that would do the job, wouldn't recommend them though.

Over £30

Akasa Eclipse
Lian Li
Silverstone
Coolermaster Cosmos

This is my personal opinion only, but I think i'd be reluctant in spending £30 on a cooler for a VGA card that's yesteryears technology, although this is just my opinion.

I'd return it, or flog it on the bay. Add the £30 to whatever you get (I sold a 1900xtx for £89 before xmas) and buy a 3870xt or 8800gt if you can stretch.

For a case, I have the CoolerMaster CM690, and can only give it praise for the severe cooling it incorporated. For £50 i think it's an absolute bargain!!

If it's a brand new card why spend another £30 on a cooler for it? If it's overheating and causing crashes just return it and save the £30

Arg the V style cases. They looked pretty nice a few years ago when they fist came out. They worked great for a cheap case and even the PSUs supplied were ok.

However they have the thermal properties of wax in a fire. Those things run so hot its untrue. Not only that, but the way the fans are held against the metal makes them hugely loud, only solvable with spacers and cutting the mesh away. The fans included with them are very noisy too.

You have several options

1) I would say return your GFX card as its new on the basis of heat and artifacting.
2) Re seat the current cooler yourself
3) Buy an aftermarket cooler

4) In doing any of the above get a new case.
