Teen Suicides

That's the thing, EMO culture seems to be all about teen angst which is nothing to do with depression - it's about being sad/over emotional which isn't the same thing.

I think one often leads to another, being sad just isn't enough for a lot of people in this culture.

It is a growing problem and it's at the highest ever, depression is now the biggest illness in the UK with heart disease at second.

Its a shame, i had depression for 10 years and lay unconcious from a suicide attempt. You can see videos, songs and read up about my progress here: www.caremyspace.co.uk i plug it whenever i get the chance because it inspires many people worldwide of all ages, and thankfully i commit my time to help people one on one, to be told you saved them or they are inspired from you an changed their life, is for me, priceless.

Nice job dude, added.

In our modern lifestyles our hunter gatherer survival skills are never really tested anymore, it's quite easy to loose sight of reality, life can end up feeling quite surreal at times. If you look at nature we are the only species that carry on this way, we live utterly bizarre lives when you compare us to the rest of the animals a lot of things we now class as "normal everyday life" is anything but.

For me there is a real lack of the spiritual / connection with nature in modern life. Life in this country is increasingly about perpetual achievement, going out there and getting the best of everything for yourself...and then once you have that getting something even better. While these achievements can bring security and short term happiness they alone do not put you at peace with yourself.

Our lives are so over complicated these days, we are flooded with information, advertising, peer and social pressures, rules and regulations. It's very difficult for some people to step outside of this bombardment and think "hang on, all of this stuff is man made, does it really matter?".

I think all this pressure and conformity distracts us away from what life is truly about and I think people who loose site of this and feel they have to keep up but can't fall fowl of a sense of low self esteem.

Not sure where I am going with this (so I'll stop) but in summary I believe that the unnatural pressurised existence that young people are brought up in these days is a massively contributing factor.

Read this story and a lot of the replies and I feel mixed about it, for example some of my thoughts were:

Thats one less weak one in the gene pool
Saves money on the NHS
Prevents kids becoming embroiled in it

while other thoughts were a lot more compassionate:

Such a waste of life
What could cause someone to do that etc

Ultimately we force kids to conform to certain images, teenagers have a quite horrific time in terms of peer groups and as a generation are getting a bum deal, poor parenting not only affects the direct children but other children as well.

without trying to sound offensive, but how did you fail to commit suicide?

I always feel if you've failed generally (there is the freak person who survives being hit by a truck at 60mph) your either not really serious and hoping something will bail you out, while it was out of your hands, so to speak.

Was reading this in the paper, apprently one of them did it because of the attention on something like bebo someone else who committed suicide got.

You only live once, and life is short, and i agree with stev, its a gift, and suicide is absouletly pathetic, they deserve to die.

The only exceptions i think are if they have a mental illness, or have suffered serious emotional pain in the past, like if they were violently gang raped or something, and none off this happened to most of the teenagers that do it.

Some pretty shocking views on some websites about this whole process - this whole 'support network' there seems to be out there for suicide is new on me and pretty disturbing. There seems to be a real spiritual aspect to what they are doing, I guess that's what gets discussed on Bebo and these suicide chat rooms.

Found this quite unsettling, particularly the bit about the girls who survived suicide bids this week...

Sweet dreams, my angel, you are a source of inspiration to us all.

i see what you are saying therel. again not aiming to cause offense.

i would never have the balls to try something. i mean i guess i've never been depressed or down enough to have those thoughts.

but i can see why some teens can go though it. there tends to be a lot of pressure towards younger generation at the moment

well i was flatline and a loud bang from a door woke me then ambulance helped...thats how :)

Three more suicides this week, the latest this morning, which makes a total of 17 suicides in the last 12 months.

How much longer will they say there's no link....

You do realise that more people kill themselves in the world each year than die from wars and murders combined?

There may be a link but I think this is possibly just a new media bandwagon.

Looks like a cult of emotionalism for selfish, self-absorbed teenagers who don't know how good they really have it.

Send them to a 3rd World nation for a few months; they'll soon see what true suffering is.

Yes I did realise that thanks. Does that mean I'm not allowed to discuss it? Does it make it any less important?

Blaming it on the "media bandwagon" is something of a bandwagon in itself is it not?
