Canon announces price and release dates for new supertelephotos

Gonna get the 800 5.6 sometime next year, thought about the 600F4 but its way to heavy, and the 500 F4 is just as sharp, and half the weight.. When it actually ends up on the shelves I imagine the 800 will be slightly cheaper than the 600 F4..
Will be interesting to see how it does in reviews.

Very interesting, I will be looking forward to seeing some live action stuff shot with the 800 f5.6!

You're going to buy a £5k lens

I think the 800mm is going to cost more than 600mm F4.
Current US price on the 600 is $7000+local tax with a UK price of £5500.

I'm going for £8k for the 800.

The perfect testing ground for the 800mm will be the Beijing Olympic Games is August this year.

lol, leave me alone :)

In all fairness to myself if you want to get very high quality photos of wildlife specifically birds, you need bonkers amount of reach 500mm+ although the 300mm F2.8 I already own was a £3k lens, and it is so good, I find myself having to resort to converters which slow down the AF and I have to stop down to F7.1 to get sharp shots, meaning its not good in low light.. I was playing around with my friends Sigma 800 F5.6 the other night and its also one i'm considering, for small birds its THE best lens out there, the Canon 600F4 is just too heavy, regardless of how sharp it is, i'm never going to be able to get it on a plane with me.
300mm 500mm and 800mm should pretty much cover my needs.. sure its a lot of money but it keeps me off the streets, I spend my working hours hunched behind a monitor I like to spend my keep on stuff other than formalities and consumables :)

Ever considered the Sigmonster Tim? It sure is silly big and heavy, but its apparently near prime sharpness and has the added benefit of being able to zoom, something which would be very usefull with that sort of magnification. :)

Yeah I have, my friends 800 F5.6 is basically the prime version of it, he is an ex professional bird photographer and swears by it.. both the 300-800 and 800 have been known as the best lens for birding by a lot of people, i'm considering either one probably more than the Canon as it is very expensive.. I tried a 600F4 out a while back and if you carry it far it'll drive you round the bend, i'm no weak person by any stretch of imagination, I know of people who have developed back problems from handholding it
I think if the Canon 800mm F5.6 ends up being twice the price of the Sigma, it won't be worth it, the IQ certainly isn't twice as good and I have trouble telling which lens is which in comparisons as the pictures they produce are all really sharp, the only thing the Canon has which is vastly better is the IS and focus speed, but apart from that I wouldn't say the Canon is worth an extra £3k. I'd sooner save that and have the 500 F4 as well which is a hell of a lens.

The Sigmonster sounds ideal for me in terms of birdphotography, and relative static wildlife photography. The one thing that puts me off though is the massive minimum focusing distance. I want more pixels per bird, not just being able to get the same amount of pixels yet have to stand nearly three times as far away.

This is true, I mean i've been messing around with birds on feeders recently, the feeders are only 3 meters away from the hide but with something like a bluetit thats still not a full frame shot @ 600mm, obviously the 300 with converters, preserves its minimum focussing distance, but the 600mm and 800mm wouldn't focus close enough there... I think the Canon 600F4 had a min focussing distance of 12 meters, and reduced it to about 6.5 meters.... still along way away for something the size of a robin.

I'd love to have the money to get some decent top end primes. I'd instantly become the most careful photographer in the world, and be insured seven ways from sunday though :D

James, you've not really grasped the costs involved in photography have you?

Not yet, wait til i get my camera, spent a few weeks/months and decide i need a new lens, then itll hit me :)

Spoken like a true pauper

Im saving 5 weeks wages to get a 400D lol..

Even then i might have to wait longer. Valentines, driving test, board, bus passes.

Should be 5 weeks but yeah, lenses are pretty shocking for me at the moment, give it time, ill learn!

You'll need to wait a few weeks at least to be able to afford a new lens :p

Well after a camera comes a new bed, after that im putting 70 a week into savings, leaving me a good 30-40 to last me the week.. More than enough after what ive paid out, so eventually ill be saving money..

So when it comes to a car, a lens, new jeans, new work shoes birthdays etc... Ill be able to afford it, hated this xmas debt i got through stupidity, have to wait a while for my camera now, end of feb im getting it!

Prices should have dropped by then am i right?

what kind price drop are we expecting?
