Looks identical to galactic civilisations

Gal Civ didn't exactly scream originality either

Gal Civ 2 does have 3d graphics and some global AI learning thingy. But I don't think uber intelligent AI is all that appealing to casual players TBH. I have trouble enough as it is;)

FreeOrion 0.3.1-RC7

So this still beta yes? Will version 1.0 be free (as open source implies?)

How far along is it?

A: The game is currently in the alpha stage. In other words, it'll be a while till it is finished.

FreeOrion, an open-source game inspired by Master of Orion, is a turn-based game of epic space strategy that builds on the classic '4X' model by incorporating the nation-building elements of games such as Europa Universalis 2 and a versatile tactical combat engine. While its modular, open-source design allows for a significant degree of customization of the game engine and the story elements by the community, the FreeOrion team is dedicated to the construction of a living, breathing universe in a 'grand campaign' model.

Shame these guys didn't make MOO3 really! I own Gal civ 2, but I never play it, I end up playing MOO2 and BOTF instead. Not as shiny, both fairly flawed in their own ways, but they work.

I always felt the attraction of Gal Civ 2 was that it was BOTF but with shinier graphics and no Borg.

There could be some element of obstreperous old-age striking there, I prefer Civ 3 to Civ 4 as well, maybe I'm just not capable of learning a new game any more :D
