I'm looking to get some new discs and pads all round on my [03] Vectra C 2.2 SRi. Is it worth just going to the dealers or can I get a bargain online elsewhere. I already know a good mechanic who can fit them.

Thanks.

do NOT go to the dealers. Seriously, they will bend you over.

Go on ebay, buy 4 Mintex discs/pads (8 pads) - i just checked, they'll cost about 110 quid inc del and get a local independent garage to fit them for 80-100 quid.

Also, you'll have good quality brake parts as a bonus.

My mum paid a crappy independent garage to fit her new discs/pads all round (volvo S80), fitting just generic pads/discs and it cost her £300.

A dealership will charge.....£400 at a complete guess?

euro car parts of german Swedish and french
Unfortunately my car isn't German, Swedish or French.

Didn't think of eBay, just been on and looked. Seems there's some good bargains too. Cheers.

Back when my dad had a Renault 25, the Renault garage wanted £400 just for 2 discs...no pads, no callipers or anything...literally just for discs.

He told them where to get off and went and made his own.

Ebay is pretty good and you can get some good deals. I got mintex discs and pads (312mm) for £80 delivered and a local garage fitted them for £20.

Dealer wanted £120 just to change the front pads!!!

Just got myself discs (grooved) and pads (mintex) off ebay, far better than what was on there before, and far cheaper than dealer items.

Are Mintex a good make for brake discs and pads then?, Ive been looking at a set for my Focus, on ebay for £41 delivered.

If you intend to fit them yourself, check out the vauxhall dealer prices first.

Might just be the dealer in my area, but retail prices are:

Front brake kit(disks and pads): £65.00 + vat
Rear brake kit(disks and pads): £65.50 + vat
Rear shoes (if needed): £65.50 + vat (unlikely to need unless high milage)

Rears can be a bit trickier to fit, as they usually have a set of shoes for the handbrake inside the disk.

Genuine part and good quality kits too. Much better and cheaper than the rubbish some of my customers have supplied from motor factors and asked me to fit. :)

^ also had mintex on my st170. had disks and pads front and rear and imo they were spot on. Press the pedal and the car stopped very quickly.
