Opinions on both these cars please.

Audi A3 Sportback - looking at the 2.0litre 170bhp Sport

Vectra SRi 1.9CDTi 16v (150PS)

Dad has choice of either for his next car and he wants it to be a Diesel. Both work out the same price for him. I tried to sway him towards a nice new A4 but he's too cheap :D How do the engines compare? Are there better configurations than those he has chosen. Of course the A3 will be fastr, he's looking for reliability and economy more than anything though. Anything to be aware of?

Cheers

There is no competition between the two.

Ask him to look at a used/new BMW 3/5series diesel?

Does the Vectra have an auto option? It's a bigger car. No DSG for the 170ps A3, afaik.
Can't imagine anyone actually picking the Vectra over the A3 tbh.

It would be the A3 no contest however I would rate the Vauxhall diesel over the VAG one. Less noise, less vibration, smoother and no DPF (unless its a auto Vectra) which causes serious problems on the Vag 170 TDI if you drive it around town a lot.

Well obviously the A3 :D

The only possible reasons for taking the Vectra would be needing the extra space, although I presume this isn't an issue or he'd have discounted the A3 by now anyway, and kit levels. A lot of the good stuff is optional on Audis and I don't know how the standard spec of the Vectra compares.

Re the 170PS engine, it does indeed come with a DPF which has been known to cause a lot of problems if you do predominately urban driving. Providing you do the odd decent speed blast you should be fine. It's a lot more refined than the old 140 and pulls like a train but the economy does suffer compared to the 140 and it's not up to full common-rail levels of refinement.

the audi by a mile.....better built, better interior, can turn corners, looks better....should i go on?

i had a play with an 07 a3 sportback over some twisty roads over the yorkshire moors the other day, said 2l tdi on it but it mustve been the 170....it wasnt much slower than me on the straights through 2nd gear, was quite impressed. Reeled it in a lot quicker in third though.

Tom.

The A3 might be the better car overall but it is much smaller. He really does need to drive both to determine how much room he needs.
