Any students that can give advice on this situation?

In all fairness, our lectures warn us so often about plagiarism and making sure we reference correctly that it would be foolish to even attempt to plagiarise something, would be better off writing a poor essay.

I think anyone who does it should get expelled, it's like spitting in the face to all those that work hard at their degrees if you just hand in something you never did and claim to be your own. Total disrespect to education and why even go to uni in the first place?

Hi Guys

I am looking for some advice from the students of the forum.

On Friday my girlfriend got a letter from her uninversity calling her in for plagerism. She had used a copy of hers frinds essay o help her write her re submit. Now I am just wondering if anyone has had this happen and can help me tell her what to expect?

Now before you all start i know what she has done is wrong and i have told her she should just go and fess up to what she has done and say sorry.

She is to go to uni tomorrow and speak to one of the head markers about the situation, so any advice would be appreciated.

At the very least a zero for that assignment/module, but quite likely to be told to leave, or only allowed to have a pass degree which is basically worthless.

if they reference her friends work say she helped her but supplied no documents - it was all suggestive.
<--- thats syndication and they will both get in trouble, as will her friend if she knowingly gave her the essay. least thats what we where told in our plagiarism lecture.

One of my mates copied from some website and just got told to do it again but he could only get upto 40. Suppose it depends on which uni it is.

The only way she'll get off is if she says that they just talked about it a lot and made notes together/spent a lot of time together while they were doing the work.

My sister got a letter like that (although she hadn't done anything wrong). She said as I just explained (as that was the truth) and nothing more came of it.

I've been called in for plagerism in a test before. Just got a slap on the wrist and a "1st warning". Apparently I "allowed" the girl next to me to copy my test, which is a load of rubbish because I didn't even know the girl. I think she got more of a telling though, probably got her test cancelled.

As for the essay, sounds serious for them to have to write to her. The essay could be cancelled completely.

I thought that was called collusion and was still a punishable offence?

Only if they actually made their work together, they can't be punished for simply talking a lot and as a result happening to have very similar thoughts on the subject.

My mate got done for paigerism on her dissertation. They gave her a mark of zero for it, without the chance to re-write. She came out with a Third overall, which I think was pretty good considering that a third of her final year marks were wiped out completely.

she gets a warning, its 3 strikes, all her work submitted from now on will be looked at more closely.

No she isnt out, no she doesnt fail the year, no she doesnt have to admit it in job interviews etc.
Yes the max mark she can attain for resitting this work is no 40%(although it was a resit so it was anyway?)

She could just say she used same notes as her friend, that way the friend wont get into trouble too? Shes gotta discuss with friend tbh since she will also probably get seen to.

what uni did you go to?

that seams far more lax than what we where told.

Agreed. As my comment above, this was my friend's first (and last) try at plaigerism and she got done good and proper. Thoroughly deserved though.

what you get told and what happens in most unis is very different :)

Im at northumbria but we did get it drilled into us about plagurism etc, but a fair few of my mates got pulled up about it last year for coding etc in an application, this is what happened to them.
a lot of the time its not deemed bad enough for the powers that be to kick someone off the degree, especially when that person pays the wages.

Unless its standard across every uni in the world then thats rubbish. How do you know she won't get asked in a job application? I've seen it come up, ie in the police. What you said is wrong unless you know the practice of every uni and every employer's recruitment procedure.

huh, this is from my experience of friends getting caught doing it.
What kind of employer would ask 'did you ever get caught plagurising at university?' ????
Isnt a bit erm, random, its hardly going to be illegal to lie either..
