Traffic fine - name miss spelt

If you go down the "That's not me" route then your girlfriend gets a £500 fine and 6 points for failing to identify.

Not really - she knew exactly who was driving and can probably prove so, therefore no offence.

The problem is him denying it was him..

If the ticket has your name on it but slightly misspelt..but it's still obviously the same name, then you will NOT get away with it in court. Slight clerical errors are allowed.

Yep i really hate red light jumpers.. Some guy i knew was killed like this a few years ago just because some scumbag was in a rush. Get the fine paid and DONT DO IT AGAIN!!!

Ok lets get one a few things straight, i have every intention of paying the fine perhaps i wrongly worded the OP - the cheque is in the envelope along with my licence ready to post after ive spoken to the police. I also take offence at being branded a "scumbag". Yes the light was red, it had been red for 1 second as recored on the fine. It was bad judgement on my behalf at 05:00 and there were no other cars on the road - that is by no means any excuse but i am no " scumbag" I have been driving for 20years and this is my first traffic fine. All i was after was the legality of having miss spelt my name should i be stupid enough to ignore the letter.

Answering your question then - yes the FPN is binding as long as it isn't a completely different name. If you ignored it you'd be served a summons, and you'd have to explain to the magistrate that yes you did jump the light but you ignored the FPN as it 'technically' wasn't your name. He wouldn't be impressed and he'd give you more points and a much bigger fine ;)

Your protestations of having every intention of paying the fine sound a bit hollow when your original post questioned whether you could "legally just ignore the letter".

If you had every intention of paying the fine then you wouldn't have posted here, you'd have just rung them straight up.

Legally ingnoring the letter and not paying are two different things - as i had already said in the OP id filled in the form with my CORRECT name and address (when i received the form after my girlfiend had disclosed me as the driver)yet they still send the form requesting payment and licence with the incorrect spelling of my name on. At no point did i say i would not pay nor had any intention of not paying.

How can you legally ignore a letter than comes to your address and is correct except a missing letter, justice gone mad, kinda that like **** lawyer getting celebs off from speeding bans because the police failed to right down the driver.

From working at the Abbey, and having a mother who works in the very building that deals with these, youll find that there are people who write out these tickets on the computer, it will be a huan error, ring them and sort it.

My mum works in the unit that deals with crashes but knows lots of people form other departments as shes a deputy, and every so often the get to spend a day with a traffic cop

Lucky fools, might be applying for a department in her building sometime soon :D

If it was a speed camera i'd say ignore it, but running a red light is a pretty serious offence. Pay up.

I'm all for removing all speed cameras and putting a camera on all traffic lights insted.

I can't believe that you even asked to be honest. Just pay up.

Maybe that can be the new way to dodge convictions. Commit the offence in someone elses car and when they get the NIP get them to fill in your details in their best 5 year old scrawl then complain about how they spell your name wrong :(
