According to Ars Technica, Sony has some big plans for a PlayStation 3 refresh, starting with a phase-out of the 80GB model. According to an "inside source" -- which Ars claims has been consistently right on video game-related predictions -- the console-maker's new plot is starting to take shape, holding fast to a two-SKU approach on packages, upping the hard drive capacity on systems, and including the Dual Shock 3 controller. The new bundles will take the high / low road, with the source stating that the 40GB model will remain on shelves, while the 80GB, Spider-Man 3-inclusive system will disappear, only to be replaced with a 120GB or 160GB configuration. Of course, right now these are just words on a screen, though in light of Best Buy's recent stock changes, there certainly is an air of movement over at Sony.

Even though im happy with my 360 i might consider that new sku. With the bigger hard drive and the dvr comin soon it might convince me. It would have to have ps2 emulation, im not havin two boxes and missing out on all those gems!

white would be foul imo, slimmer black for me (and sony have helped in developing a smaller more reliable blue laser diode according to anandtech)

but a huge (in console terms) 160GB drive would make sense for pvr usage

white console would be quite nice i reckon.

speaking of different coloured consoles, and i apologise for being slightly off topic here, anyone have any idea when the Wii is being released in different colours?

I am thinking of getting a PS3, mostly for watching films but some games (GT5) that will not be out on the 360, and this is stupid by them again.

They should have just stuck with the 60GB one then released a 120GB one now so there is no confusion with it all.

The whole point of getting rid of the 60gig was to cut production costs and therefore retail costs, this tactic seems to have helped PS3 sales immensely. To keep the 60gig and then introduce a more expensive 120gig would have been a bit... counter productive.

By the time the 120gig is being manufactured, production costs will have fallen so i imagine it will be around the same price as the 60gig was, maybe less, and the 40gig will have fallen in price further, thus giving the consumer a decent choice between SKUs. A 60gig vs 120gig choice would have been a 'ok you can buy an expensive console, or an insanely expensive console' decision.

why the rolleyes in OP

Because in the PS3's year and a bit history it has had

20GB
40GB
60GB
80Gb

120GB and a 40GB (with DS3)

I thought the 360 was awful for having so many different versions but this is getting silly.

I must admit, I have completely lost track of what each model of PS3 is made up of. It's confusing to consumers and I can't see how they can make the new model attractive if it ends up more expensive because it has a bigger HDD.

hardly a new SKU just a HDD upgrade, certainly not worth kicking a fuss up about.

That's exactly my thinking?!

Don't know why people are up in arms by it, it's not like you have to spend £100+ on a 120GB HDD ;)

The hard drives are easily replaceable anyway...
