Yet more SKU's from Sony

I'm sure I could fill it if I tried but how hard is it to delete stuff. But only if you want to use it, and haven't got a PVR already like Sky+, BTVision etc. Besides, 'coming soon' is so vague.

I mean the extra space is hardly a bad thing, but I just can't see many being overly keen to get the extra space. The 360 needed a larger HDD than 20GB, and I suspect the PS3 is getting an 120GB (or more) model just to one up the 360.

Believe me - there are those that want it, there are those that will use it and as such there are people who will buy it.

I have 2 friends who are eagerly waiting for Play TV.

lol, another one. Their business strategy isn't exactly great. I guess Sony don't like Microsoft offering a bigger HDD.

There is actual benefit in the PS3 bigger drives though, since you can copy your media files to the hard disk, and with the pvr thing coming out shortly, bigger is better.

The 360 big hard drive unless you plan on downloading a lot of movies to watch in a short space of time, or a lot of demo's, is overkill.

Play TV has no bearing on this. That is a UK specific service they will offer, and there is no way the 120GB is coming here before the USA and/or Japan.

I suspect that some new service is about to be offered (movie downloads, music, tv shows etc) that will use the space. Without this I can;t see any particular reason why they would offer the larger HDD now, unless they have got a good deal on 120gb or 160gb due to economies of scale/bulk discount.

Having said that since the divx update I can see why all regions should have larger HDD options as you can now copy a lot more stuff onto the ps3 HDD. As others have mentioned, with 360 it was not really necessary due to the closed nature of the HDD (Only Live content will go on it + ripped CDS), whereas the ps3 HDD can almost be used as multi purpose (copy your movie files, pictures, music to it directly without restrictions = PSN content)

The PSN IPTV service is coming online sometime this year, its all ready being used in Korea, but i dont know whats available. The music video download service is also on trial in Australia, used that a few times just to see what it is like.
None of the bigger HDD PS3 have much evidence where as the FCC ruling on a white PS3 is, so i expect the 80Gb current pack ie with motorstorm, maybe being phased out to be replaced with another 80Gb bundle deal (uncharted?). The white one will prob be a 40Gb DS3 edition, like in Japan, it prob will come over here later in the spring.

playTV is listed as being released 31st of March and costing £99

Sony's whole attitude with Europe and the PS3 sucks, they also made lik-sang bow out. Ergo no PS3 or slim line psp for me!

Therefore-ish - I probably spelt it wrong or something. Dyslexia for the win!

PS3 is the first console I haven't bought in a very long time and it feels good not to own one :(. I do wish Sony's attitude was better, but hey ho! If GT5 and a decent FF game come out I will no doubt cave. 160gig pvr, blue ray and a PS3 for circa £400 almost sounds like a good deal.

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/30/sony_denies_ps3_storage_rumours/

Sony has dealt a blow to any storage-hungry PlayStation 3 gamers by officially denying that it’s planning to introduce either a 120GB or a 160GB version of the console into the UK.

This week, rumours have been flying around that the company’s due to phase out production of its 80GB PS3 in the US to replace it with either a 120GB or a 160GB model for the same price. UK gamers hope that the sale of a larger capacity PS3 in the US would be mirrored in over here.

Well, no it won't. A spokeswoman at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) today told Register Hardware that it “has no plans to bring either a 120GB or a 160GB PS3 into the UK”.

It's been suggested that the higher capacity hard drive might appear alongside the anticipated PS3 TV tuner, the PlayTV, which Sony announced in August 2007 ahead of the product's scheduled "early 2008" launch. PlayTV contains two tuners to allow the PS3 to operate as a full digital video recorder (DVR).

In a double blow, the SCEE spokeswoman also denied that any larger capacity machine will include a DualShock 3 controller, as also rumoured yesterday. She instead stuck to her guns and reiterated Sony’s 2007 speech that the rumble-enabled controller will appear in the UK and US at some point during 2008.

I have to say, those people who are looking forward to PlayTV, and who only have a 40gb PS3, had better get an order in for a new HDD while they're at it. I have a 160GB PVR, and I certainly wouldn't go any smaller... especially if I had game demos etc to store on there too.

"Sony has dealt a blow"

"In a double blow"

typical journalism - in a response to rumours made up a suspected upgrade SKU by internet fans

LOL

Why would they deny something that's good news?

Because people would hold off on potential sales? I think it is now standard fare for big retailers to start off speculation of a cheaper/newer model (as they often know before us when the old model disappears), then the company Sony/MS will deny the price drop/new model, then low and behold, we see the aforementioned deal.

Standard response from any company tbh, pior to a new model or price cut, don't see the fuss myself.

The 60GB original UK spec jobbie is the only one that is backward compatible with PS2 games. It also ran very hot indeed and had instances of failure.

The 40GB ones are not backwards compatible with PS2 games, they lack the additional 2 USB ports and memory card readers. Rumours are flying about that Sony are going to start making PS3 compatible versions of PS3 software available on the PS store.

UK started with 60, then went to 40GB to hit the £299 price point which has hugely increased take up. The HDD in PS3 is home upgradeable with only a cross head screw driver. Any 5400rpm 2.5" SATA HDD will fit in the PS3. Mine has a 160GB drive which gives 149GB of useable space for £50 MS cannot compete on that.

Japanese PS3s are many and varied as the low spec ones don't even get a Blu Ray drive for movies, they are really stripped out. The top end ones have all the bells and whistles.

Japanese home market is very odd, people will blow £1000 of pounds on the best new kit at one end. And many people will buy a PS3 at the very low end to join in the tech race!

Very strange country Japan. Very clean and very well ordered, but very strange!

Is the above post a joke, some japanese ps3's don't have blu-ray drives, lol.

Sir your entire post is nonsense.

p.s. ps3 compatible versions of ps3 software ?
