the problems with being in charge of IT at work...

here people think anything electrical you can fix, ive been asked to look at TV's radio's etc because i will look and try to fix their pc they assume anything electric they will ring me in the office. And the amount of times they think that cause we provide tech support in school that includes home pc trouble aswell

"Is it turned on? The button turns it on.."

....

"You do know what a button is, don't you?"

...

"No, not on clothes"

...

"Is it glowing? ahhh doesn't matter, I just heard it come on!"

...

"no, that's the music that comes on when you turn it on"

...

"ARE YOU FROM THE PAST?!!!"

or or the latest one was that because I work in IT I have this conversation in a satalitte office....

Me: "Hi, I'm here to fix your DM problem"

*Stelly starts doing computer things*

Woman: "Do you play World Of Warcraft?"

Me: "Erm, no, it takes up too much time, and well I have lots of things and people to see in the real world"

Woman: "Ow ok, I just thought that most people like yourself played it"

Me: "No but it is very popular"

Woman "Yes, I have played it a few times, not sure if its my cup of tea"

*Stelly stops doing things with computer*

Stelly: "Right thats done, you should now be able to use DM"

Why is that because I work in IT I have to play online games, especially WOW?

TBH that is a bit touchy, I mean she sounds like was just making conversation. besides you should play games, she is correct.

I had a good one yesterday, a lady phones up saying she hasn't received any emails today and she knows people have sent her some. So i connect to her pc, and expand the Today section in Outlook and there they are!!!

That happens a lot

I get a lot of people travelling and inevitably they come to me when they return having forgotten their password. I usually change it to 'numpty' :) They don't forget after that!

I still can't believe I get number lock problems with the keypad as well

Saying that, I had one person who didn't know that you could have more than one windows open, so they would open Outlook, read an email, then close Outlook, open Excel, do some work, then to read email, would save and close Excel and open outlook....

Worst thing is trying to explain why when a user uses the task manager to kill their "Citrix" excel application, it is still wonder why it is broke the next day when they open it up..:p I use a Video recorder to TV analogy and explain that they need to call me so I can stop the "video" from running and turning the TV off won't help :p

brill thread, reminds me why i like IT, so make fun of those than no nothing. similar thing happenes in college, i'm on an IT course & quite good with hardware, so when ever some1 wants to do know anything with hardware, they always ask Phil... what's this like, or will this work with that. most are ok as they listen and are interested, others take what I say & do the oposite, or just don't listen

I've skim read so far. But.

I had a conversation the other day with a senior manager at one of the offices I 'support'. It went a little like the following:

"Why is it, every ******* time I phone the helpdesk Im told to switch my ******* machine off and back on?!!?!"

"Did it solve the problem?"

"errr. Yes, but .... blah blah blah."

*grins* :D

- People who do IT support thinking they are technical.

People who give IT Support guys a hard time because they think they're all monkeys that are paid to answer the phone and log calls. You can't tar everyone with the same brush. Some Desktop Support guys are extremely technical. And no I don't work on a helpdesk or in Desktop support.

I think you all need to lob your PCs out the window, get some thin clients in, and watch all your problems dissapear :D

When the issue at hand is PEBCAK (Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard) thin clients dont help at all. Administration wise yes, fantastic. The human elemant is what gets you everytime :P

The one thing that gets me in my job is that our IT team (of 2 people including myself) get asked to do EVERYTHING. "I need a cabinet moved" or "Can you move these files from one side of the office to the other"... Epic Fail mentality in my humble opinion :(

Sent out an email today about some monitors we are going to be selling or else scrapping. We recieved emails back asking about everything from servers to pc's to filing cabinets. If we were selling anything else surely we would have put it in the email?
