Due to University scheduling, ive got a fair bit of free time over the next 2 months. Therefore ive decided to delve back into the world of mmo's. Anyhow, i'm basically stuck trying to decide between two currently on the market.

EVE Online
Got 2 flatmate's who play this a lot and the whole large scale wars in space theme seems rather appealing. I tried the 14 day trial a while back but found myself unable to invest a large amount of time into it due to unexpected work however I do feel it showed some promise. One of my flatmate's has even been banging on at me today regarding a giant war, which sounds hilariously cool. Looking at the game though it seems like a lot of waiting for skills, with no real user input speeding up how fast you can achieve these goals. Of course, this probably makes the game last longer but does it make it any less fun?

Lord of the Rings Online
I bought a retail copy of this when it came out and played non-stop throughout the 30 day trial. This however was whilst I was at Uni and I stopped playing due to the lack of internet at my home address. I really enjoyed playing the game as a level 33 Hunter and I was in a good guild (Dunno if theyre still around) on Snowbourne. Alas, all of my friends who once played it have switched over to either WoW or Eve but then they didnt enjoy playing as much as I did.

With the 3 months for £18 deal LOTRO's got going at the minute it seems like a good shout, however I would probably be playing the majority of the game on my own. On EVE im jumping into a new universe with my friends, unsure of whether or not they are giving my unrealistic impressions of the gameplay.

What do you guys think is the best option of the two? Ive listed as best I can my basic impressions of the two games and would welcome any advice.

Cheers

And no, I am not interested in WoW. Ive already lost enough friends to that godforsaken game. I do not wish to lose myself.

Seriously? Neither! I'd never get into an MMO that I would potentially have to leave in 2 months - you just can't enjoy the community in that short a time, and in most games you won't even hit the endgame. The only exception is if you had a friend starting out with you and you could spend those two months levelling your characters together.
Get a good singleplayer RPG instead!

Personally I would Pick Eve-O, only because i play it heh. The skill training times in my opinion make the game much more interesting as you go along. Although LOTRO is a good game aswell from what i hear.

I think unless you played WOW right at the beginning then it's pointless as lots of the attraction for me atleast went out the window when you hit 60.

I've sen LOTRO and it looks similar to WOW gameplay wise so I'd say EVE especialy if you've got friends that play it.

WoW is the only MMO. 10 Million Subscribers.

Yeah, most of them under the age of 5. Or at least acting that way :p

Eve requires a lot of your time - the real game is in the PvP, and if you want to do that, you need shed loads of cash (you'll loose a lot of ships until it starts to make sense), and for that you generally have to grind npc kills.

LOTR - you could probably see all that is has to offer within the space of two months. Nice, easy, pretty game, and probably more suited to your current situation. Not a patch on the depth of Eve, but easier to get into and get the most out of in two months.

Or Korean Gold Famers...

Anyway on topic. Eve is very in depth and very strategic rather than arcade-like. It will take an age to catch up to the more experience players (as the skill credit system is completley time based rather than XP based). You could still have great fun though if you like that type of game. There's a free trial for it so I'd say try before you buy.

LOTRO is good. You could see it all in a few months but that would be rushing it. Some great people on it and lots doing various quests so you should always be able to get in a group.

Cheers for the input guys. Just want to clear afew things up quickly.

Although Ive got a relaxed next few months it doesn't mean im going to be quitting the mmo once the work piles on again. Im planning to get some assignments done over these two months so im not overwhelmed with work ;).

As of yet im still undecided. LOTRO would be a good option but I remember id be on it for 4+ hours at a time, either questing or exploring. EVE on the other hand looks a lot more like a drop in & drop out game, however with a large introduction curve for new users. Im currently downloading the EVE client to try another trial (different email addy), maybe it'll help sway my decision.

Wow got boring the moment I entered go here kill this fetch this grind forever it sucks, go with EvE its amazing or Pirates of the Burning sea which just arrived today so will let u know laters

UO and EVE are "sandbox" type mmos as opposed to WoW and its clones that are more of a directed experiance. Once you have done all the pve content in wow all you are left with is its pathetic watered down pvp :(

EVE seems like its the best game to play on and off as you can train skill offline (Not sure how it works though). UO is pretty dead now but if you get a decent guild you can still have some fun.

Check out Tabula Rasa too if you want some ground-based sci-fi. Very similar in structure to LOTR - some very well crafted instances, but you can drop in for a half hour firefight and still have fun. Bugger all PvP or crafting to speak of though.

Resistance is futile!

Not sure if you're joking or not, but that's no guarantee of quality, it just means Blizzard has more subscribers than any other MMO.

Is The Sims the best game? No.
Are Big Macs the best food? No.
Is WoW the best MMO? No.

To the OP; I'd recommend LOTRO out of the two you suggested, but that's only because I've not played EVE :) I suppose the deciding factor would be do you prefer PvP or PvE.

Either Ultima Online or Everquest. Both fantastic games although a bit dated now but they were the originals in bringing MMO's to the forefront and argueably still the best.

No argument - UO is certainly looking its age now.
However as an MMORPG it still hasn't been beaten.
The ability to do what you like when you like, the fact people log into the game and do nothing but chat for an hour or two shows what kind of a community is there.

I've played nearly every single MMORPG at some point or another, however I'm still to find one that offered the same experience UO did.
