Not much of a constructive input, but I wouldn't be too keen on the idea of working in international waters.

Dunno, I was thinking the real life pirates with guns and shizz. Occasionally you hear something nasty happening due to them.

Yes there's a chance that my happen but you get the paid a wage in proportion to the risk. Also Oil Rigs are worth to much money to not have adaquate security. And if anything does happens there are special forces teams such as the Special Boat Service and the Navy Seals that are on worldwide 24/7 standby that have been trained to deal with threats to oil rigs.

Ah, right :) I wondered what they did about security. I wonder if they have armed guards on the rigs themselves?

Um, are you sure about this? I'd think the Navy Seals have a little more to worry about than some bloke with a parrot on his shoulder and an eyepatch ...

Yes i'm sure. Piracy still goes on in some parts of the world and oil rigs are a prime target for them. Also there's threats from international terroists and 'eco-warriors'. If an oil rig get's attacked/invaded special forces are immediately deployed.

tpye 'oil rig jobs' into google.co.uk lots of information out there it seems a lot of agencies want a fee but I'd imagine competition for jobs is quite high so this wouldn't be unusual. The major plus is the money the downsides are that it's hard work in a harsh and boring enviroment and you spend a lot of time away from home.

Think less eye patch and parrot, more speed boat and assault rifle... :p

They use speed boats, automatic weapons and satellite technology to create a wave of terror on the high seas. The pirates of the Nineties are far deadlier than the heroes of the past.

Offshore work can be fun, but it can also be very boring. I think you spend around 80% of your time waiting around and the other 20% working your balls off. The pay though is good, as are the other benefits. If you work in the UK sector, forget about any tax breaks. Gordon will still get his paws on your cash.

Be aware though that working offshore has some serious downsides, you will spend a lot of time away from home, you will also miss importnat things like birthdays, Christmas and so on. This can be tough on relationships.

Working offshore is VERY safe. Safety first is drilled in to you. Idiots that endanger others are not tolerated. The most dangerous thing you will encoutetr offshore is the food, depending on the rig, you can expect to put on quite a few kilos.

Off the coast of Nigeria Possible, off the coast of south america unlikely, off the coast of Scotland unheard of and very unlikely.

Talking about Oil Rigs I always imagine them being in some dodgy area, but I don't think I'd have many concerns if I were working off the coast of Scotland.

I have a few good mates who work on the rigs, in various positions from roustabout to drilling technicians.

They all seem to like the money, but don't like being away, and the single ones seem to have turned into alcoholics as they claim to not have anything else to do with their free time when they are home. Married ones get on fine though, although missing Christmas must be difficult.
