I'm an idiot, I was half asleep this morning and put 4 litres of diesel in my petrol car. I didn't realise and drove a few miles to work, when i got to work It then clicked that I have a petrol car! Seeking Advise I asked my work mate what to do (used to be a mechanic). He said that petrol into diesel is the killer of cars and diesel to petrol should be ok if I top up with petrol, he also said it would simply act like 2 stroke oil and the car will blow some smoke. I've now filled my tank up full with petrol (33 litres worth).

The reason i'm posting is to just get some extra opinions that everything will be ok as i'm a little stress.

Car make is peugeot 106 1.1 petrol engine (N reg).

I think some people actually put about that much diesel in their cars then brim it with petrol, so to be honest I think it will be alright :)

I once accidently put a jerry cans worth in my Little Fiat Cinquecento, then shoved about £25 of Unleaded in and it was fine..

That's what I did, I put just under a jerry cans worth in, I do hope everythings fine I can't afford to get anything fixed right now.

I think it will be alright. a 1.1 N reg Peugeot won't have a sophisticated engine, so it will probably just run a little rough while you run it down. Just top up the tank as much as possible for a while to dillute it as much as possible

Petrol into a diesel is generally OK, so long as you top it up with A LOT of diesel, It's say if you can get it down to 20% your OK.

It'll take much less to do damage to a petrol car, especially if it's a fairly modern one.

That's pretty dodgy advice. Petrol in a modern diesel (VAG PDs, TDCi etc) is an absolute no-no. It's the quickest way to wreck your engine, as petrol doesn't have the lubricating properties of diesel.

Diesel in a petrol is comparatively not so bad. It's still not an ideal situation, but you can generally get away with a system flush and changing the fuel filter on a petrol.

As for this case, I'd just keep the tank brimmed and leave it be. On such an old car it's unlikely to be problematic.

Won't a small amount of petrol just do the same as an ethenol additive like they use in diesel race cars?

How did you manage to put diesel in your car when the nozzle is too big to fit into the filler hole?
