I cannot understand why the salt content of so many foods is so high.
I was very surprised upon looking at my box of sultana bran to find that per 30g there is 0.5g of salt. So in a decent sized bowl of 90g per say, there is a whopping 1.5g of salt!

Why on earth is there this much salt in a simple and (perceived to be) healthy cereal?

and secretly the food industry want to shackle everyone to hypertension and obesity, so they will be less mobile and eat more. Or I could be talking crock.
 
ye to preserve probably in summat like that. but a lot of salty foods are for flavour, i always add a generous helping of salt to most things i cook, adds taste.
 
ya i agree with the pot noodles... horrible

same with mcchicken nuggets :( used to be so so so so nice, then they took all the salt and stuff out
 
The amount of salt in bread is shocking. I eat a healthy diet which is completely ruined by the gits at Hovis and Kingsmill. Apparently they are afraid if they remove salt people will move to other brands to replace the 'false' good taste

How much? When you make your own you put 1 1/2 teaspoons in and it isn't a massive loaf.

According to this link, http://www.hovisbakery.co.uk/range/white/classic-white/medium.htm, there is 1.13g of salt per 100g.

For an 800g loaf this is just over 9g, almost 2 teaspoons. Not a massive amount more than you would use in home baking.

I don't agree that the a healthy diet is 'completely ruined' by the amount of salt in bread as suggested above though.
If you're eating enough bread for it to make a large contribution to your dietary sodium it's not that healthy a diet anyway.
 
No 90g for me would be 3 helpings. A normal helping is around only around 0.5g of salt which is fine if you are eating a healthy balanced diet. This is not directed specifically at the OP by the way (becuase as far as I know he could be an ideal weight, fit and healthy), but a lot of the problems in this country are to do with portion control. People eating relatively healthy foods but complaining that there is X grams of fat, salt etc. when it fact it's the portion that is the problem.
 
guy on about chicken nuggets - try making your own :) you can use less salt and get a better taste, spices etc are the way forward :P
Pot noodles were always mingin ay..
salt is an essential part of a lot of cookery so removing it will generally kill the taste of a lot of things. Easy way to avoid high salt things = cook self, that way you dictate the amount of salt and only put enough in to satisfy your own tastes

You are right that the recommended serving is 30g, however i weighed this out and it was an absolutely piddling amount. I think in this case i shall have to eat less of it. My love for the sultana bran is great.

The salts not there for the taste. Its to control the yeast.
 
High salt content in foods isn't too much of an issue, it's lack of education in nutrition. A lot of people don't check the packaging or really monitor what they eat. I'm a bit of a health freak but also a bit of a gym freak so I eat a high quantities of high quality food - and as a result monitor my intakes carefully. It's almost routine now to check what I'm eating, and I keep a tally in my head of what I've eaten - I now know roughly how many calories I take in, the number of protein/carbs and the amount of fats and salt content. It's all approximate but in general on a daily basis it's all about level.

Yes there may be high levels of salt, but if you monitor what you eat then it shouldn't be a problem. besides you need a certain amount of salt every day anyway!

If you want to talk about **** "foods" like pot noodles, chicken nuggets etc - then you should maybe reconsider eating that sort of crap if you're worried about salt. As for bread - well I don't eat much of it, but if I do I bake it myself. :)
