Ok will kepp this short needs to be no more than £1200 really and can be plasma or LCD, needs to be at leat 46".

Ok what are the pros and cons of each technology at this size?

Is 1080p worth the extra at the moment?

Whats a good set(s)?

Cheers.:)

For a lot of Standard def stuff you'd want plasma almost without a shadow of doubt.

1080p def not essential unless very up close....main advantage of it is as a media centre to hook up a pc for 1920x1080 res.

LCD's ghosts a bit more i think?

It'd probably be easier if you explained exactly what things he'd use it for, then someone could make a good recommendation on that kind of budget.

Well mainly freeview, DVD's and in the future the next gen of high def dvds (blu ray or HD DVD) in that order of importance.

Yea it sounds like its got plasma written all over it :)

£1200 is an awkward budget for plasmas a you can get an very good 50" plasma like the PS50Q97HDX that'd probably be ideal for your dad for well under £900 or you can go nuts and spend £2-3k on a pioneer and have the absolute best.

People may recommend the panny's but i dunno much about them :)

I was going to recommend the TH-50PZ70B which is the latest Panny, is 1080p and can be had for about £1350 or the TH-50PX70 / 700 which can be had for about 900-1K. These are 720p but are still very good televisions.

Without going to the 2k+ of a 50" Pioneer, I'd recommend a Panny.

The 1080p Panny's are great, if you can stretch the budget to get a TH 50PZ70B then you'll have a great TV for both Standard Def, and High Def viewing. The lower resolution TH-50PX70 is still a good TV if you cant get the 1080p set within the budget.

For TV and Movies, the Panny plasma will pretty much out perform any LCD TV you can find. Not quite so good for hardcore gaming, as image retention can pop up from time to time, but it does normally fade after a few hours. Plasma isnt the 'gaming nightmare' it was a few years ago. Plasma fine for an occasional gamer, and perfect for a TV/Movie fan.

the TH 50PZ70B are very good, we sell a couple every week now. The only thing on the market that is better (without spending lots) is the pioneer.
