4X4 Tax - Are they all £400 in April?

A mate seems to think that all 4X4 vehicles are going to be £400 to tax from April.

I've got a 99 Jeep Cherokee.

I thought it was all New 4x4s from a certain date (some time last year, wasn't it?)

This is what I thought but he's adamant its ALL 4X4s.

Don't think so, IIRC when it all came about there was mass panic and 4x4s started going up for sale all over the place, then it settled when people realised it was on new vehicles only.

He's wrong, it's vehicles with greater than 225g/km of CO2 emissions, and it has to have been registered after 23/03/06.

New 4X4s (or any car) which produces over a certain amount of CO2 get hit with £400 tax. Not all 4X4s fall into this category either

Depends on the CO2 output. The 3.2 V6 A3 is in band G, for example, the new impreza STi is band G, as is the evo IX.

The press have billed it as the "4 x 4 Tax" and said that chelsea tractors are being taxed it, and you're in trouble if you've got a 4 by 4. Sadly, this was sensationalist and totally un true

as above, its down to your Co2 emissions and is down to how old your car is. Doesnt matter how much Co2 it puts out, if its an Older 4 x 4 it doesnt apply to you. This probably only applies to like 10 % of the off roaders. But it didnt stop the press raving about the 4x4 tax

Pretty sure there would be outrage if the goverment back dated a tax hike like that to older 2nd hand vehicles. For a start that would seriously devalue a lot of 2nd hand cars!!!!

Had me worried on emissions, my Jeep has rows of rabbits and field mice crying as I drive past at 3MPG.

I shed my tears every morning at the pump.

Nope, only newer vehicles.

My dad's 1996 3.0 V6 petrol Shogun, which does <20MPG - he pays as much for tax as someone would for a Peugeot 306 diesel that does 50mpg

Exactly! They can up the tax (or drop it). But they can't turn round and classify it in a different category that effectively means your tax bill doubles.
